Time for a thread on c̶o̶l̶o̶u̶r̶i̶s̶m̶ racism in S Asia and the diaspora. @priyankachopra says she’s been rejected for international roles in the ‘West’ for being dusky. Wish she’d had the same mindset when she endorsed fairness creams back home in India https://twitter.com/i/moments/984014429653229569
Those who know me also know I love PC’s confidence and iconic style evolution. However, her backing of skin whitening is something I can’t overlook. Sure she’s public ‘regretted’ her decision - what a way to whitewash (pun intended) her actions?
Spare me your pseudo remorse, the damage has been done. Also, the irony of desi stars crying racism in the West when they proudly make millions through sponsorships and endorsements of such vile products in the Subcontinent.
Also don’t @ me to spark an argument re: skin whitening is akin to tanning 🙄 I don’t give unpaid lectures.
I’ve said countless times and I’ll say it once again, as a brown woman, if your opposition to racialised sexism against women of colour neglects the oppression of women darker than you then it’s hollow and worthless. Inclusivity and intersectionality MATTER.
It’s all well and good to ‘regret’ your support of blatant racism once you’ve made millions from it w/o a care for the impact of your actions in a society that stigmatises women for being anything darker than ‘wheatish.’
Also worth mentioning is the two-faced nature of S Asian stars at home and in the West. Y’all should learn from Shilpa Shetty (forever diva) and her Big Brother days before you go overdose on vitamin C injections in hopes of skin whitening. I see you Deepika Padukone👸🏽🙏🏽🔥💯
