Hey guys! So recently it was brought to my attention that I’ve been using the ancient definition of sister signs instead of the modern definition, and I wanted to share my thoughts with you on it!
Sister signs are now synonymous with opposite signs, meaning the sign opposite to yours on the zodiac wheel. For example, in modern astrology, the sister sign of Taurus is Scorpio!
However, the ancient definition and usage of the term “sister sign” indicates that two signs share a ruling planet! So instead of Taurus’s sister being Scorpio, it is Libra, because they are both ruled by Venus!
I personally prefer the ancient definition because (in the words of @cactysss ) they are born of “the same mother” aka the planet.
I have found that opposite signs are more attracted to one another than ancient sister signs, who in my opinion share more similarities.
Opposite signs to me learn a lot from eachother, and there is great attraction between the two, whereas ancient sister signs are more closely related at the core.
Take Gemini and Sagittarius as an example. In modern astrology, they would be sister signs/opposites. They’re both mutable, both notoriously bad at commitment, and both traditionally extroverted.
However, Sagittarius has a definite sense of self whereas Gemini is in a constant identity crisis. Sagittarius is constantly searching outside themselves while Gemini is more reflective, hence the opposites.
However, if you look at Gemini and Virgo (both ruled by Mercury) you see the planetary influence at play. They are more two sides of the same coin than two opposing forces.
I don’t believe there is more harmony between ancient sister signs and opposite signs, but I do believe there is a fundamental difference and prefer the ancient definition.
The ancient sister signs are:
Aries-Scorpio: Mars
Taurus-Libra: Venus
Gemini-Virgo: Mercury
Sagittarius-Pisces: Jupiter
Capricorn-Aquarius: Pisces
However, one of the reasons the ancient definition is impractical is because, as you can see above, not every sign has a sister sign, but every sign has an opposite
Therefore, the modern definition is infinitely more practical and inclusive.
Despite this, I still feel a personal attachment to the ancient definition of sister signs because I believe that the nature of signs that share the same ruling planet are more similar and therefore closer to “sisters” than opposite signs are.
This thread is just my personal opinion, and if we ever use the term sister signs on here, we will be VERY clear on whether or not we use the ancient or modern definition, but I thought it was interesting and I wanted to share my thoughts with you guys!
