THREAD: Underrated movies and shows to watch on Netflix. (You’re welcome.)
Imposters:
Just finished this. So addicting and exciting. If you like How To Get Away With Murder, you’ll love this.

Basically, a guy marries a con artist and she steals all his money, so he tracks her down with her other victims and gets in on the con. SO many plot twists.
The Night Shift:
Great show to watch if you like Grey’s Anatomy. It’s about doctors at a Texas hospital who work the night shift in the ER, most of which are former soldiers. It has all the drama, medicine, love triangles, and hot guys (and girls) that Grey’s does.
What Happened To Monday:
Crazy movie to watch if you like Black Mirror. Basically, it takes place in a future dystopian society where the government forbids having more than one child, so seven sisters have to pretend to be one and hide the truth from the government.
Sleeping With Other People:
Two college hookups cross paths many years later, and try to help each other get past their commitment issues, but begin potentially falling for each other along the way. Very cute and very funny. You’ll fall in love with both of them, honestly.
American Crime Story: the People v. O.J. Simpson:
Most underrated show ever. Best thing I’ve ever seen in my life, hands down. Should be mandatory for everyone to watch.

It’s a retelling of the infamous OJ Simpson murders, but shows both sides and beyond the trial.

Phenomenal.
The Stanford Prison Experiment:
Also based on a true story. Shaped modern sociology and psychology studies. Amazing cast, flawless acting.

A study at Stanford assigns roles to volunteers as prisoners and guards, but everything goes...terribly wrong. Examines abuse of power, etc.
Easy:
Netflix original show where each episodes tells a different story about love, life, and sex. Really great. Great, star-studded cast. Touches on many relatable and interesting issues: monogamy, open relationships, threesomes, escorting, and so much more.
The Little Death:
Similar to Easy, except it’s a movie. Touches on stories of several different couples dealing with their sexualities and, specifically, orgasms. Cute, funny, lighthearted, enjoyable.
The Loft:
Psychological thriller where five (married) men share a secret loft to carry out affairs and other shady things... but then a murder occurs, and their friendship crumbles as they try to figure out which of them was responsible. Bonus: Isabel Lucas is unbelievably hot.
Boyhood:
Award-winning movie about coming of age. Boyhood follows the same character (and actor) for twelve years as he faces the struggles of growing up. Beautifully made.
White Girl:
A college girl in NYC gets herself into a lot of trouble while trying to have fun, chasing cocaine and hookups and adrenaline. She meets a sweet, sensitive guy who grew up on the streets but tries to change for her, and everything goes wild.
The Imitation Game:
A closeted, genius mathematician works on a team trying to break the Germans unbreakable Enigma code during WW2 while struggling with the secrets of his own identity and sexuality. Many Oscar nominations and wins. Amazing.
Copenhagen:
An immature player travels Europe in search of his dad, but falls in love with a local girl in the process – only to realize she’s significantly younger than him, which forces him to grow up and confront his own issues.
It Follows:
Crazy, weird, but wildly interesting. Dark thriller. For fans of Black Mirror.
After she first sleeps with a new fling, Jay realizes that she has acquired a scary, supernatural curse that she must pass on to her next lover to get rid of the demons following her.
Teenage Cocktail:
Two high school girls start a camming business to save up cash so they can leave their small town, developing crushes for one another along the way... But then, they take things too far, and everything goes terribly wrong.
Don’t Think Twice:
Cute, funny movie about an improv comic troupe and the chaos that ensues when one of their members lands a gig on SNL and the fame gets to his head. Stars Gillian Jacobs (AKA Mickey from Love) and many more.
1 Night:
Nice little rom-com where a young couple on prom night crosses paths with a couple in their 30s that are struggling with their future. Cute and lighthearted and stars Justin Chatwin from Shameless (who I am in love with).
5 to 7:
One of my favorite romance movies. So beautifully written. I cry every single time.
A young writer falls in love with a beautiful Frenchwoman in a semi-open marriage and they both learn and grow from their relationship. There’s much more, but I won’t give it away.
Watch.
Casting JonBenet:
This is a very uniquely done piece, and not for everyone. Kinda different but it comes together beautifully in the end.
Local actors in JonBenet Ramsey’s hometown audition for a dramatization of the murder case. Hard to explain, but very cool.
The Model:
A young aspiring model moves to Paris to follow her dreams, but just as her career begins, she’s caught in an affair with a sexy, older photographer, whom she becomes obsessed with. Absolutely wild and addicting. NOTE: first scene is foreign but the rest is in English.
Atypical:
Cute show about the family of a teenage boy with Asperger’s Syndrome. There are mixed views about the portrayal, but I’ll let y’all decide how you feel about that. Overall, an enjoyable take on family life (that you can actually watch with your family.)
Adventureland:
A funny, nostalgic rom-com, especially for those with a dry sort of humor. Reminds me of a Michael Cera type of movie. Kinda like Juno mixed with Superbad.
Two teens work at a lame amusement park for the summer and deal with coworker drama and their own feelings.
Miss Stevens:
Cute movie about three teens who travel to a weekend drama competition with their high school teacher. The teens are played by a strange mix of familiar faces: Lili Reinhart (Riverdale), Timothée Chalamet, and Lohanthony. Lighthearted and enjoyable.
Being Charlie:
Netflix description: “Spoiled, rebellious teen Charlie’s failed attempts at drug rehab reach a turning point after an intervention from his father and a sobering incident.”
Mixed reviews about the portrayal of addiction. Watch and decide for yourself! I enjoyed it.
Enlighten Us:
This is a really interesting documentary about James Arthur Ray, the infamous self-help guru (often described as a cult leader) who was convicted of negligent homicide when 3 of his followers died during one of his retreats.
King Cobra:
Very hot. So many famous actors. Inspired by a true story. Not for the faint of heart.
When hell breaks loose in the gay male porn industry, some people will do anything to get what they want. Reminds me of a modern, male Lovelace (which is my fav movie ever).
Exit Through the Gift Shop:
Super cool documentary about street artists, particularly Banksy and the mystery behind his identity. Incredibly interesting and thought-provoking. This film is one of the reasons I became interested in street art and the stories behind it.
Nymphomaniac:
Both Volumes I and II are currently on Netflix. Really wild, controversial Lars von Trier films where a female sex addict recounts the tales of her sexual history and how it began. Also not for the faint of heart. International films, but they’re in English.
Adult World:
Emma Roberts plays a recent college grad who works at a sex shop to make money, but she’s really a wannabe poet who tracks down her favorite writer (played by John Cusack) and befriends an artist (Evan Peters) who makes her rethink her beliefs along the way.
Milk:
Oscar-winning biopic starring Sean Penn and several other famous actors. Tells the true story of Harvey Milk, an openly gay politician in San Francisco who was infamously murdered by a colleague with a gun in 1978.
Suite Française:
A Frenchwoman is forced to let German soldiers live in her home when the Nazis occupy France, and ends up developing feelings for one of the officers while her husband is away as a prisoner-of-war.
Aquarius:
A TV show retelling of a young Charles Manson that begins when a naïve 16-year-old falls under his spell and vanishes with his cult.
Stars David Duchovny from Californication. Side note: if you haven’t seen Californication, watch that too.
Echo Park:
Lighthearted rom-com. A woman named Sophie has a sort of mid-life crisis and leaves her rich Beverly Hills fiancé to move to Echo Park and figure herself out, while falling for a new man who makes her question her formerly perfect life.
Should I keep going?
