the guy jimin has pathetically had a crush on for a while, and is too chicken to do anything about it.

“too late, i already accepted! you’re going to speak to yoongi hyung tonight, and that’s final.”

taehyung decides he shouldn't spend too much time thinking about jeongguk leaving him on read. sure, it slightly stings, but after all it is just text messages and he's sure he'll get a reply soon.

that is until minutes turn into hours and hours turn into days.

taehyung has lost count as to how many times he has texted jeongguk without getting even one response.

he doesn't care if he seems needy. there's no way he was going to drop this - he needs to speak to the other about what happened that night.

he decides to take his mind off it the next morning by visiting the coffee shop on campus, realising he needs some extra fuel to make it through the vigorous tasks his course has him doing.

the distraction is working until he walks in and spots the boy he’s been trying to contact for the past 4 days, sitting on a table in the corner, with someone right next to him.

he keeps re-reading the texts he just shared with taehyung with a smirk on his face. jeongguk doesn’t know what it is about this boy, but he can’t help but smile.

he can’t help but smile at taehyung’s stubbornness.

he can’t help but smile at the way taehyung texts, and how similar it is to the way he acts in real life.

he also can’t help the guilt he feels rotting away in his chest.

jeongguk lies in bed, tossing and turning as the one thing occupying his mind won’t leave.

he wants to message taehyung. he shouldn’t, he really shouldn’t. but he really wants to.

he fights an internal battle with himself before he gives up and grabs his phone, pressing taehyung’s chat and typing a message, only to then delete it entirely before throwing the phone back down.

regardless of the memories, he still wants to show his appreciation for what taehyung did. no one else would have dared to threaten someone so much larger than them, for property that wasn’t even their own.

jeongguk smiles to himself as he remembers the moment from earlier, taehyung’s confidence prominent in the way he spoke, threatened, and punched.

he remembers the moment outside of the coffee shop, where he was first taken aback by how much taehyung was unbothered by his words.

his smile grows and fondness fills his chest as he reaches for his phone, tapping to open taehyung’s chat.

he feels stupid re-reading texts like he’s a teenage girl in her first relationship, but something about taehyung has him feeling that way. he smiles at the way taehyung texts, and his personality shines through his messages. -

- he imagines taehyung’s voice when reading over his texts, the way his face contorts to every expression in relation to what he's saying.

jeongguk really can’t stop smiling. he’s making a conscious effort not to, but he still can’t help it.

he falls asleep that night with a smile on his face, and taehyung on his mind.

taehyung takes into account everything namjoon tells him. he knew something was up with jeongguk, so this is basically a confirmation. naturally, taehyung is curious — but he doesn’t care if he can’t find out right now.

namjoon implied that jeongguk was changing after he met him, and just hearing that gave the other a sense of relief. taehyung is helping him, even if that is ever so slightly, and so he decides that it's exactly what he’s going to continue doing.

taehyung can’t pretend like he isn’t hurt. of course, he always wanted to make an effort with jeongguk, for reasons of his own. but just as he was attempting to move on and coming to terms with the fact that the older simply doesn’t like him — namjoon texted him.

of course, he can’t be angry at namjoon. he only reached out to taehyung because he’s concerned about his friend, and when taehyung considers the situation with him in namjoon’s place and jimin in jeongguk’s -

- he understands why the other is making such an effort to make sure taehyung doesn’t give up on him. he would do the same for his own best friend.

now that he’s making an effort once again, jeongguk is completely shutting him out. his constant blunt replies, and now him straight up telling taehyung to leave him alone. it’s unbearable, and taehyung thinks that he doesn’t have to put up with this.

but he wants to. let’s call this his final time trying with jeongguk. not just because of what namjoon told him, but taehyung himself wants things to improve with the other — because of the fact that everything aside, he was still the person taehyung lost his virginity to.

this was a concept he was unhealthily obsessed with. he knows he shouldn’t give his first time as much importance as he does. sure, depending on how you look at it - it’s “sacred”, but he knows he shouldn't be stressing over it. -

- and yet he still is. he wants to at least share something similar to a friendship with jeongguk.

taehyung’s thumbs dance over the keys as he considers the possible responses he could give. when it’s been a few minutes and he still hasn’t sent a reply, he receives another text.

taehyung closes his eyes and attempts to calm the annoyance rising within him. who does he think he is?

but before he can reply aggressively, he remembers a quote that he once read – “everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about, be kind. always.”

and with that, he takes a deep breath. it’s the final chance he’s giving jeongguk, even though the latter isn’t aware of this. he wants to try. and so he does.

taehyung’s excited.

since their texts last night, he’s been patient enough to wait for jeongguk to message him with the location he decides. taehyung’s got a plan. whatever random café, library or restaurant he knows jeongguk’s going to choose to meet in - he’ll get there first.

but jeongguk hasn’t replied, and the fact that he’s taking his sweet time is frustrating for an enthusiastic taehyung — who has it all planned out.

he’ll reach the meeting point first, maybe a few hours beforehand, to plan only the best possible service for jeongguk.

there’s a lot riding on this. this meeting means that they could potentially become friends, and they can both be happy.

it’s that simple, right?

it’s only when he receives the response that his smile drops.

he doesn’t know why he just abruptly got up, it wasn’t even that big of a deal. he made it worse by leaving for no reason.

it’s only when taehyung wakes up the next morning and checks his phone, that his mouth drops open in shock.

they meet at the campus shop, no awkwardness between them other than the fact that someone came up to them asking if they were a couple because they’re wearing similar clothes. taehyung laughs awkwardly, most probably not the most eloquent way of handling the situation -

- as jeongguk sternly says no and walks away. they sit silently at first, both adjusting to talking to each other in a civil manner while sober. taehyung initiates the conversation, with jeongguk seemingly getting more comfortable as it goes on.

after that, it’s a smooth ride. jeongguk relaxes around taehyung easily. albeit not being completely open, he still treats the other like a good friend, and taehyung is happy with that. he hopes that one day, jeongguk will feel comfortable enough to tell him what’s on his mind —

the things that make him sometimes not text taehyung back for days, the things that he knows are the reason that he sometimes sees jeongguk with red eyes. but he’ll wait. as long as he needs to. he’ll wait because he cares.

they spend almost all the time they can get together after class and on their days off. their friends tease them for being attached at the hip - but neither seems to mind because their friendship means more to them than some harmless teasing. it’s shocking for people to see -

- jeongguk so comfortable around someone, them usually gaining negative attention in the form of dirty and disapproving looks thrown at taehyung as they walk around, but jeongguk jokes around with him to make him ignore the others.

taehyung runs to get the pizza as soon as he hears the bell ring. he wants to see if food would make jeongguk happier, taking his mind away from whatever negative thoughts had changed his attitude in the past few minutes.

but when he returns to his room, jeongguk’s not there.

“sweetie, what are you looking for?”

“um, where did jeongguk go?” taehyung asks, no nervousness in his voice as he still sees the other’s jacket. he hasn’t left the house, at least.

“he just went into the other room, i’m not exactly sure why.”

and so taehyung walks across the hall, pizza slice on plate in hand, to find his friend.

he finally hears jeongguk speaking from the inside of a room, but as he goes to open it, his hands freeze at the words he hears.

taehyung falls asleep there, his stomach filled with comfort food and the movie nearing its end, and jeongguk’s fingers softly stroking his hair as he drifts off into a deep sleep.

the only thing he remembers in the last few seconds before falling asleep is jeongguk’s voice -

- stating in the lightest whisper, evidently not even meant to be heard by the other,

“i wish i knew why you look like you’ve been crying.”

what should taehyung do?

1. speak to jeongguk - take a chance and see what happens by speaking to him, his reaction will be unpredictable.

2. wait it out - let jeongguk speak first, whenever he chooses to, even if it may take longer.

and that’s exactly what taehyung does. he waits, and waits, and waits.

ever since the day of the phone call, taehyung has noticed a difference in jeongguk. maybe he’s overanalysing, maybe he isn’t. but he notices a difference.

he sees the way that jeongguk doesn’t laugh heartily anymore, the way he smiles less than he used to, the way he occasionally looks like he’s randomly gone into deep thought after taehyung does something that the latter would usually find cute.

he doesn’t say anything, however. and it’s killing him. knowing what he knows, knowing how jeongguk really feels. taehyung can tell that something doesn’t feel the same between them anymore, and sometimes, just sometimes — he wonders if jeongguk can feel it too.

but he said he’d wait, and that’s what he’s going to do. the truth is, when considering how close the pair had gotten in the past few months, taehyung knows that he would wait as long as the other needed. of course, he’d do this for any friend.

but if he’s going to be honest with himself — jeongguk is way more than just a friend.

taehyung mentally curses at himself, because this wasn’t meant to happen. they were just meant to be friends - he wasn’t meant to fall for jeongguk, and yet he did. he’s an idiot, he thinks, and he knows his timing couldn’t be more off.

jeongguk already has so much on his mind, he shouldn’t need to be burdened with the thought that one of his closest friends likes him, knowing full well that he doesn’t like him back. taehyung decides that this is something he’ll never tell jeongguk.

maybe one day, taehyung decides, when jeongguk’s happily married to some other guy, he can bring it up as a joke and they can both laugh about it, while reminiscing on old memories.

he pretends that his heart doesn't sting at the thought of jeongguk with someone else.

a few days later - how jeongguk’s night is going

taehyung knows what he has to do now, it all makes sense. he knows that this idea has the potential of getting a positive reaction out of jeongguk. it’s just a matter of whether he goes through with it now.

does taehyung do it? you have 20 minutes to decide.

taehyung decides that he’s going to do it. he’s seen how down jeongguk has been, and he doesn’t know why he ever dismissed the thought in the first place.

maybe this is what jeongguk needs to hear in order to stay. in order to feel like he’s worth something.

without taking even another second to think, taehyung grabs jeongguk’s arm and pulls him back around so he’s facing him.

“jeon jeongguk.... i love you.”

jeongguk freezes as taehyung anticipates his response.
