In the 1/2 loop-triple combos, some skaters "turn over" (or Dick Button would call it a "step out") in the half loop with the right edge pointing upward, but some skaters point it downward. With Yuzuru he points the toe pick upwards. This helps his 3A1lo3S looks good and natural.

Many skaters don’t point their toe upward in the half loop combo. They point downward. hence their 1/2 loop looks like a step out, very awkward and not pleasing to the eye, look here. This is the issue with Maria Sotskova at WC 2017: ">https://youtu.be/yienT1mXc...
Shoma Uno also points his toe downward in the 3A1lo3F combo. It’s not pleasing to my eyes.
I love Anna Pogorilaya but she also points her toe downward in her half loop combo. Hence this combo of her never looks pleasing to my eyes: ">https://youtu.be/0qgzP5hfl...
There is no rule requiring skaters to point their toe upward or downward in the half loop combo. But back in 1980s, when this combo was kinda new, Frank Carroll taught Linda Fratianne to point her toes up when she executed this kind of combo so it wouldn’t look like a step out.
