A little more on this, you say...?
Okay.

2. Let's "date stamp" this up, shall we?
Dec. 16, 1985, Gambino crime boss, Paul Castellano, is assassinated.
The hit was an unprecedented inside job, orchestrated by his underboss Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, and Sammy's crack-pipe driver, John Gotti. https://www.nytimes.com/1992/03/04/nyregion/shot-by-shot-an-ex-aide-to-gotti-describes-the-killing-of-castellano.html?pagewanted=all
3. I know y'all have been sold a bag of romantic 💩 about Gotti, but he was a prop. Anyhoos, Gotti (as prop) got voted up to crime boss, & the dye was cast. The much smarter Gravano kept running the 5-burrough concrete biz, w/ dotard as their 💯 favorite front.
4. If you're @FBI OC unit, you gotta hunt down the assassins, no?
I mean... that's the f*cking GAMBINO crime boss. Shot dead. In the street. By assassins wearing Russian hats. HOLY SH*T.
So, who are you looking at? What looks suspicous? What just ain't right?
5. A: The crack-pipe driver, who somehow ascended straight to crime boss. That's what. That does not look right to agents who track the mob. No, no, no. THAT looks like an inside job.
So...gotta squeeze the insiders. That's where the goods are.
With me? Good.
Back to the dates.
6. End of '85 is the hit. It takes 5 yrs for Gotti to be arrested (Dec '90). B/c that's how long it takes to squeeze informants, until you get to the boss.
Then, a trial beginning in '92 & conviction on April 2. With Gravano delivering the testimony that sent the crack pipe away.
7. So, how did Mueller get to Gravano? Well... how do agents get informants?
One way - a favorite way - is to squeeze some in-the-know folks, who are under investigation for their own crimes.
They'd be helpful, right?
Right.

8. Wait. Back up. I forgot to tell you that it's helpful for prosecutors if their informants are already well-known to @FBI organized crime agents. 🤫
9. SUPER helpful if you've given them subpoenas and gotten them to spill.
10. Oh look, more investigation. Super, duper, helpful.
11. Oh my. The New Jersey gaming commission needed some info from the DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE. You know... the big boys.
Well, they have their pat answer.
12. But, when it comes to investigations, there are always ways to get the information out - sometimes, even to the soon-to-be-rat-informant himself.
