When I say “best vs. puzzle game,” I refer to how Puyo Puyo Tsu& #39;s(2) design allows for more player interactivity than any other puzzler thanks to garbage and one more mechanic...
Sure Puyo Puyo Tsu introduced the All Clear bonus, an extra NEXT window, 3-color opening pieces, and a bunch more; but I think Tsu& #39;s most defining trait is the counter mechanic!
In other puzzle games, you race to complete the objective first, compete for a higher score, or survive an endurance test. You do all of that without really influencing the thoughts or actions of your opponent.
In Puyo Puyo, there& #39;s a real punishment for taking damage (your build gets buried) and now in Tsu there& #39;s a counter mechanic to punish players for attacking willy-nilly.
So now there& #39;s this crazy metagame where you have to decide when to attack, counter, tank a hit, extend, set off your main chain. It kinda plays out like a fighting game!
An aside: I know a lot of people know Puyo as Dr. Robotnik& #39;s Mean Bean Machine or Kirby& #39;s Avalanche, but those were reskins of the original Puyo Puyo.
