— hoseok's vocal color evolution: a thread.
i just wanna start telling everyone that i'll only refer to hoseok's vocal color, by that i mean his flow/timing + style (and some voice). how much he changed while trying to find himself
i'll be analyzing each BTS korean album in order, putting here some of the songs just to see what changed and what didn't. (ps: bear in mind!! this will be long. and this isn't a vocal analysis thread, so i won't be talking about hoseok's tone.)
firstly, hoseok used to try to find his flow with yoongi's, their raps used to be really similar on style and timing.
on 2c4s, being their first single, as i mentioned before, you'd expect hoseok's flow to sound just like yoongi's on every song, but i like it has its unique point.
this song in particularly, hoseok changes what he did on the other two, slowing his rap a bit and following the instrumental track. this was the first sign of his own color.
next, for o!rul82? there isn't that much of a difference from 2c4s. mainly there were two main points for this album: if i ruled the world and coffee.
for if i ruled the world, the timing is different, but the flow isn't the right one yet. he tried again to combine his rap to the instrumental and it turned amazingly even not being the best
for coffee, just like i like it, there is a singing part, but the main point for this song is: he was able to properfly follow the song and create a flow for himself, a slower one. hands down his best rap for these 2 first albuns
skool luv affair was something else. in this album hoseok tried to keep with the "style" of following the instrumental track and slowing his timing. he also tried some new flows, shoutout to the intro, boy in luv and where did you come from?
but none of these were his real style. still on skool luv affair, hosoek tried one more thing that showed the best that worked for himself at that moment, he gave us spine breaker.
this song doesn't show his main style and it lacks a bit towards the end, but it's still one of the biggest improvement, how he was able to find something that worked with his slower timing, he gave us another sign of his own vocal color.
there was still too much work to do, but he had something for his own now. something he could improve even more and that's what he did with dark & wild.
starting dark & wild, i wanna mention danger, hip hop lover and cypher pt3 together because he gave us improved changes from the style he tried with skool luv affair, but with his new flow there
these songs aren't as perfect as they could be, but the upgrade is noticable. plus he was still trying to find what would fit his style the most, since he already knew he would do better with slower timing.
rain and let me know are songs just like the other three, but his vocal color makes bigger appearance. rain brought back the feeling of singing + rapping and the beginning of this song will always be my second favorite part of his raps.
lastly about dark & wild, there's this song where he was able to bring the three main things together: his own style, his flow and his timing. he fit everything perfectly creating a even more concrete vocal color for himself. second grade is all of hoseok's work and improvement.
the way this song changes and hoseok follows each part of it effortlessly, how he built his own style there with adlibs and matching his previous tries all together in one. everything here is perfect, i love this song so much.
hyyh pt1 had some other changes. i need u and hold me tight followed hoseok's previous tries of singing + rapping, these ones with the improvement that rain gave him. and dope and fun boys had the flow + timing + style together, just like second grade.
one new thing for this album would be move, the way he rapped, how his voice sounded it's a lot more similar to today and how he raps slower songs nowadays. this was a masterpiece for his vocal color.
hyyh pt2 being my favorite album to date i feel the need to talk albout all songs. run and butterfly follow the duo singing + rapping. these two are clearly the most beautiful ones, how he was able to perfectly connect his voice and match the instrumental
whalien 52 and ma city have similar forms, the changing of timing and flow, but he never loses the back track and the voice work that move gave him is there again + the amazing adlibs.
baepsae was built by himself. he made 90% of the adlibs and that recreated the whole instrumental of the song. with that being there, this song obviously would be done at it's best and truly is. his timing and voice are so connected to the song
and lastly, autumn leaves is this one amazing song that, for me, shows hoseok's color at the best. his voice, his flow, his timing and his style. everything there was perfectly fitting. this song until today screams "hoseok's song" to my ears
hyyh pt2 was a masterpiece for hoseok's vocal color. he was able to pull everything from the previous albuns and improve even more. all the tiny changes and the style that he built by himself were finally done there, but this isn't the end.
young forever, being part of the hyyh series, is similar to hyyh pt1 and hyyh pt2, fire and young forever are songs just like ma city and whalien 52, fun boys and dope. all the work of switching between fast and slow timing and the best adlibs to complete his style
save me is that song just like move and autumn leaves. his voice and style are on point and his vocal color is shining the most. also he owns this song just for his part.
for wings, i won't be talking about his solos because they deserve their own thread, so blood sweat and tears and cypher pt4 are songs that prove how his style and flow could still improve from the hyyh series up to now.
just like bst, 21st centyrt girls has its own vibe. where his voice sounds different, similar to move, but more connected to the instrumental itself. this song is his true vocal color up to date.
following bst, 2! 3! is a song that he alternates between singing and rapping, but not like the previous ones, he goes with a much slower timing, making his voice and flow sound a lot better
a quick analysis recap for wings: hoseok slowed even more his timing, finally finding his true flow. but that doesn't mean he won't do fast raps anymore. it's just his style to be able to fit everything where he wants (cypher pt4 is a proven)
ynwa kept the changes from wings. most of the songs there had a timing drop for hoseok's part: not today, outro: wings (twice) and you never walk alone: a supplementary story.
since he doesn't have a first layer line in spring day, nothing is different there. going back to outro: wings, his second rap is quite fast towards the end, it follows the instrumental, but the timing is still slow, just like what i mentioned before.
lastly we have the love yourself album, the songs aren't that much focused on changing the instrumental so it's a bit tricky to get hoseok's vocal color here. the things from ynwa make presence again with best of me and outro: her.
also his rapping and singing style makes a great appearance on dna (rapping, almost singing), pied piper and go go. that's his main style now, his color.
for mic drop, this song is probably the ultimate one, everything mentioned before is here and you can feel that he's there showing what he truly is now. his own style and flow, something he created until now. hoseok's vocal color.
a final analysis: from 2c4s that hoseok almost didn't know what to do, he tried fast raps and going with yoongi's flow/style, to going back and forth between changes of timing and flow + trying to find his style and finally creating his own thing there with the hyyh series.
he improved it with wings and ynwa and showed us that he didn't need to be carried by the instrumentals anymore with love yourself. and there is still much more to see. that's hoseok's vocal color today, something he built and recreates every time with bts songs.
