A flyover is proposed to be built in #StratforduponAvon that will destroy one of the most precious parts. It’s wrong and here’s why [thread]
1) Putting a concrete flyover literally at the bottom of people’s gardens is wrong unless it is demonstrated that there is absolutely no other option. It is not okay in local government to make policy that ruins people’s lives.
2) This one road route has been the only option put forward for public consultation. The public deserve to be able to weigh up the pros and cons of several route options when proposals with such huge consequences are on the table.
3) Because an *holistic* public consultation has not taken place, the route has not been selected by the public or even a representative public body but by developers with their own considerations in mind. This is not how major infrastructure should be developed.Unprecedented?
4) There are so many constraints on the land chosen by developer for this road (floodplain, height clearance in case of future rail, SSSI, crossing Avon) that in short this road is bigger, higher, uglier than it would need to be in almost any other location.
5) And worst of all, it will not deliver the perceived traffic benefits. This road in my opinion will have a short shelf-life (like Seven Meadows Road) because it looks to feed traffic into a road (Shottery link road) which is a housing estate road- not a bypass or relief road.
6) As that road becomes more congested over the years (because it’s in amongst housing), we will need yet another relief road (in ever increasing circles?). All this harm for a white elephant. This is not a transport strategy - it is a sticking plaster.
7) The fact that there is this much local opposition to a proposal which received no opposition at the time it went into the Core Strategy/Local Plan is the only proof needed that the way we consult on Core Strategies/Local Plans in the country is not fit for purpose.
8) Clearly those most affected by this road proposal didn’t know or understand the significance of this proposal when it was put into the local plan yet its existence in the local plan will be one of the main reasons to justify approval of grant of planning permission.
9) I am so proud of residents who have organised themselves to try to communicate all of this to wider #StratforduponAvon residents&visitors; the majority of whom will only appreciate the significance of this proposal when it is in situ&then will ask who allowed this to happen.
10) These are some photos of the CALA’s consultation. This is the level of detailed consultation that I would expect to see pre-Core Strategy stage. It is clear to me that this road proposal will have a devastating impact on the area and those that live there.
11) These are the CALA consultation boards for information
12) And this is some of the information provided by residents
13) Public servants cannot implement proposals that blight the lives of people unless they are absolutely sure they are the only option or even the ‘least worst’ option. How can this be know unless the alternatives are debated and examined in detail?
This is the impact on individuals day in day out; before even considering the harm to the river ways, tourist walks, open space, noise, air and light pollution the effects of which will travel much further and wider than the acutely affected area.
This is @QuentinWillson talking about the harmful effects on #StratforduponAvon of this proposed flyover https://www.facebook.com/StratfordResidentsAG/videos/2089891777989997/
An update. This is the position of the proposed flyover in relation to local houses
The orange balloons depict the height and length of the road deck in this location
Thank you for coming today @nadhimzahawi to see the impact of this proposal on #StratforduponAvon. I look forward to hearing whether in light of these scenes this is an acceptable way forward.
A flyover at this height will mean that the noise will be heard into the heart of Stratford and along currently quiet riverway and public footpaths. We are looking at effectively obliterating a hugely significant area of green space. That’s before we get onto visual impact.
This road is aimed at helping HGVs avoid Stratford. Because this road is so close to residential areas, in fact it will drive them and link them up to residential roads. That isn’t a relief road.
