KPOP PROPAGANDA, EMOTIONAL WARFARE, GROUPTHINK & YOU!

A THREAD
INTRODUCTION:

I& #39;m sorry this thread is so late, but I& #39;ve been busy and a bit tired.

Anyway, this is one part spin-off from the fandom trauma threads, and one part asking questions of how certain attitudes or behaviors came to be ... and suggested solutions for coping.
KPOP & PROPAGANDA

I& #39;ve been thinking about this ever since a wave of SEA ARMY hit my inbox and let me know that the "Korean Wave" pretty much is barely a ripple -- despite what many people were led to believe about the success of K-idols abroad.
I actually feel like the reason for so much hostility against BTS & ARMY (and the actual receipts we have for record-breaking and international popularity) is that no such receipts really existed before us. They were GREATLY exaggerated for the most part.
I really do feel that so much of the K-Pop community (and I mean international community when I say this...) exists in a state of groupthink. Everyone accepted the media played exaggerations, and when they are blatantly challenged...people don& #39;t know how to cope.
SOLUTION:

There are companies with a vested interest in having international fans believe certain things about the K-idol industry that aren& #39;t true. Whether it& #39;s the success of their artists or those artist& #39;s actual happiness.

So think critically about what you see & hear.
PSYCHOLOGICAL/EMOTIONAL WARFARE

Whether it& #39;s days of hate hashtags or constantly contacting news sites and encouraging negative news stories, BTS/ARMY have put up with a lot of bullshit. And much of it was intended to break our collective spirit.

That& #39;s emotional warfare.
SOLUTION:

You have no control over the decisions of other people being horrible, manipulative or toxic. But you DO have control over their access to you, and how often you interact with them online.
Don& #39;t interact with people who are rude, stalkerish, and otherwise problematic. Just mute/block them and go about your day. If they can& #39;t talk to you, if they can& #39;t even see your account, they have zero impact. And getting as close to zero impact as possible should be the goal.
One suggestion I liked that was in the Medium article I linked is to flip the script on these harmful people.

Remember during the AU when we ignored toxic fans and they got mad? Or how frustrating it is for toxic fandoms that we respond to their threats with memes?
When you don& #39;t do what toxic attention seekers want or expect they lose their power and influence.
GROUPTHINK IN KPOP

I know I mentioned it before, but I& #39;m going to mention it again because I really feel taken aback when people act like it& #39;s a crime to put all your time and resources into a single group. Or demand you let groups have a chance to be on top.
I tend to see this behavior EXCLUSIVELY from i-fans.

Actually, I had a very long thread that I decided not to do on how many i-fans were manipulated into being multi-fandom specifically because foreign currencies tend to be worth more and the more money they spend, the better.
Had it...but decided not to do it.

Still, I find it interesting that this is an international attitude that is not challenged by the K-industry in Korea...yet international fans are encouraged to spend all the money on everyone.
Not everyone in Kpop is like this, but it& #39;s a problem you encounter a lot as someone who& #39;s not in this "stan a dozen groups, spend money on and vote for everyone" mindset.

You may have people coming at you like there& #39;s something wrong with you and it can get annoying.
SOLUTION:

The obvious solution is to listen to whatever artist or artists you want and tell other people to mind their damn business. ... But I realize that some people are much more polite than me.
Basically learn to tune out people who feel entitled to dictate your music tastes, who you stan, etc. Some people think that bringing "peace" to Kpop is everyone stanning a dozen people. That& #39;s just not how life works.
CLOSING THOUGHTS:

I& #39;ve decided I& #39;m going to make this the first part of a more in-depth look at where this groupthink and these psych warfare habits are coming from.

I& #39;m thinking it will be a blog post. For NOW, I wanted to give people some helpful solutions for coping.

I still have a lot of research to do as and I will be revisiting this topic. Stay tuned!
