while a lot of ppl knew, a few didn’t & someone made the point that newer fans should be educated on why allkpop is an unreliable source of information, so here is that thread!

to begin, lets know the origins of allkpop. allkpop used to work as a parody news site. while they did report on kpop “news”, the articles themselves weren’t.... tasteful.

(these were back in 2008 and most likely have been deleted from the site)

their articles from 2008 all share the same theme: they all bashed the artist in some way or form. calling people “gay”, using slurs, making fun of idols’ looks and appearances..... etc.

now that we’ve established how ugly allkpop is, lets move onto different things allkpop has pulled through the years

first lets talk about ailee’s nude leak scandal

ailee’s ex (vice pres. of media content @ allkpop) tried selling the pics to dispatch & said he’d sell them somewhere else since they declined. the pics ended up leaking online & allkpop wrote an article about it 2 months later

after allkpop posted the article, dispatch released the conversation transcription with the ex-boyfriend

to make things short:
ailee took nude pictures of herself after she got an offer to be a lingerie model. this was actually a scam that targeted female college students. ailee confided in her then-bf (who worked @ allkpop) and was persuaded to send the pics to him, which she did

allkpop denied that they got ahold of the pictures illegally, and that they were sent an email with a link of the photos

however daniel lee, ailee’s boyfriend and the former vice president of media content at allkpop, admitted to trying the sell the pictures to dispatch

yall they do this so much its so annoying smh

allkpop tends to have a habit of either a) writing click-baity headlines or b) writing articles and mistranslating

example 1: jessica and tiffany

when asked about debuting around the same time as tiffany, jessica reportedly said “why? of all people?” angering many fans

however, this was proven to be false thanks to @/SonexStella. stella is a reliable sone (SNSD fan) who has done translations for YEARS. after finding the original korean article, it was revealed that allkpop mistranslated and took jessica’s words out-of-comtext

BASICALLY, a fan told bbh that she had depression and he said that he didn’t understand it BECAUSE he doesn’t have depression himself. this wouldn’t be as big but a translator (who is NOT an exo-l) mistranslated his words and manipulated audio recording

it was a PRIVATE event where taehyun was NOT the only one performing. only 5 tickets were limited for taehyun’s fans bc there were other artists too lmao

essentially, t-ara was accused to be being fellow member hwayoung and after a collection of “proofs” surfaced on pann, the scandal went viral internationally. allkpop and netizenbuzz were always the first to post these “proofs” and present them as fact

it has been confirmed, however, is that no “bullying” ever really occurred.

WHILE i’m on the topic of nb, nb has been both a VICTIM and INSTIGATOR along with allkpop. lets talk about her being an instigator.

if you don’t know, nb, or netizenbuzz, is a popular site that often translates reactions from certain news

nb is VERY popular with the intl community but she will often post biased articles w/ negative comments, even if theres a positive article with more upvotes

what made nb so popular today is, you guess it- the t-ara scandal! literally right after a “proof” surfaced, nb would make a new post

if nb was able to gain that much traction, can you IMAGINE the pull allkpop had, esp since they have so many readers?

nb actually used to be an employee at allkpop, who was ironically oftenly praised by daniel and johnny for writing good articles. though they exposed her, nb went on to defend them both AND still got bashed

dino was caught sending a shirtless video to someone, who many assume is his girlfriend. the “girlfriend” had lost her phone when it was found and the video was leaked online. not only is dino a minor (why i covered the pic), its a literal invasion of privacy

thanks to @/ironravi! allkpop posted this article A WEEK AFTER THE WHOLE INCIDENT WAS CLEARED. essentially, leo was thought to be dating a fanpage master, who kept posting on her social with romantic and lovey dovey captions

the whole situation was proven to be untrue, but why did allkpop wait ONE WHOLE WEEK to report on this??

example 14: their mv “reviews”

i’m js.... but if you go to allkpop looking for an eloquently written analysis on your favorites’ newly released album- WHY??? bc you will be disappointed. severely.

(i’m js but seoulbeats is my go-to for album reviews)

allkpop’s “reviews” lack depth and understanding. all they do is say “this sounds nice” or “the rapping is cool”. there are usually little subtle cues that are difficult to pick up, unless you’re korean or unless you research/dissect each song yourself.

there are WAY too many examples but lets look at this first example on btob’s brother act

the last pic is part of the review for the mv and like...i don’t even know what to say...

thanks to @/KthZeus! bts was never confirmed for an interview, only a mini concert. a lot of people assumed there was an interview when there wasn’t

thanks to @/kaymarie_kpop! allkpop mistook gavin, jayjay, & yeah nice as members of the group when they’re the composers. the lack of resarch they put into their articles is astounding.

thanks to @/summerdaisy7! jb was accused of making sexual jokes even though everything doesn’t add up. they did state it was most likely fabricated but the headline is super misleading for ppl who don’t bother to stop and read the articles themselves

ending this thread bc its gone on for too long lol but there are definitely WAY more examples of why allkpop isn’t a good source. i’d recommend using soompi, theseoulstory, or any trustworthy translator in your fandom!

i know we say it EVERY single year, but please do make the effort to block allkpop and support other better sources. don’t let things slide until something happens to your bias.
