Was lurking on #girlmedtwitter on another account but decided to migrate here instead. A bit shy, but I'm hoping to gain mentors & friends through this! I'm Hannah, graduating college senior, gonna take a gap yr before applying. More about me in this thread!
As a bioengineering major, I initially had no idea what career track to take. I think I was prematurely scared out of pursuing medicine, but through the first 2 yrs of school, I realized that patient interaction & helping ppl directly is important to me.
I always knew I wanted to pursue a biology-related/human health related career. After getting my feet wet in research & talking to ppl in biotech industry, I cemented my path toward medicine!
It was difficult though, feeling "behind" compared to others who knew this is what they wanted since the get-go. I am still fighting that insecurity today, but I look forward to graduating w/ my BioE degree & finding a clinical job after graduation/MCAT this summer!
My #1 choice would be medical scribing - and then any medical assisting job that has on-the-job training w/o requiring a certification. So if anyone has any tips on that, would be very much appreciated! <3
I believe that my degree has given me a unique perspective on tech/engineering/healthcare & look forward to expanding my perspective!
More about me: I LOVE to dance (genre: urban/hip hop -- I've been part of multiple teams including as a choreographer), pursues creative writing in my free time, and is otherwise involved in church, research, and...napping :)
Hopping back on this thread to say: so instead of just landing a scribing job, I got something even better working as an ophthalmic medical technician! ofc scribing is part of the job, but there was so much more hands-on one-on-one patient interaction
I also had awesome mentorship from the physicians at the practice! their letters of rec as well as their endless support really helped me get to where I am today <3 I also learned so much from my patients and about the complexities of the healthcare system
definitely excited to see where the rest of my medical training takes me! :)
