We care about nothing anymore because we are forced to live as though we don't. To truly care about our privacy, or the environment, or the future of anything we ought to hold dear would terrify and alienate us, because we are compelled to be implicated in its destruction.
Modernity is that which makes us all its agents. To love something in our time is to contradict oneself.
To live your principles in an age of slackening and disintegration, you have to be observant, analytical, and considerate about everything, and puritanical and eremitic in response to it. You have to solve and escape mazes, and flee to the hills, in order to say still.
You really are forced to be your own philosopher and social critic, because nobody else has been here before to leave you a guide, even if your objective is, as mine is, to live according to the guidance of those who have gone before.
