130 years ago,The State Normal College for Colored Students opened its doors for the very 1st time with 15 students and 2 professors. #FAMU
FAMU was founded by 2 men: Jonathan Gibbs - the most educated Blk man in Fl and Thomas Tucker, the grandson of a Sierra Leone Princess #FAMU
For the next 20 years, FAMU battled the RACIST Fl legislature who wanted Blks to simply be domestic servants and field hands. #FAMU was like
NathanYoung, FAMU& #39;s 2nd Pres. Did NOT play games w/Fl. He insisted Bllks learn both Industrial & Liberal Arts Education. He was fierce #FAMU
FL refused 2 pay Young the same $4,000 salary as other state presidents b/c "No negro was worth $4,000." They cut funding/fired him. #FAMU
#FAMU next Pres Robert Lee came from @TuskegeeUniv (sister school). Led for 20 years/doubled size of campus - mostly during Great Depression
Lee added paved roads, a hospital, a nursing program, and a mid-wife institute. FAMU WAS TRAINING BLACK WOMEN AS MID-WIVES! #FAMU
Lee was also the first president to die on campus. He is still FAMU& #39;s longest serving President. Lee Hall is named in his honor. #FAMU
Alright...I& #39;m back! Now...1940s usher in a new era for FAMU. Our new pres , William Grey is 33 years old and he is not here to play #FAMU
President Grey has a vision for FAMU. He hires a SLEW of new faculty and staff including Sybil C. Mobley and Dr. William P. Foster #FAMU
Yall didn& #39;t hear a word I said cuz you too busy not listening. THE FOUNDER OF FAMU& #39;S SBI AND MARCHING 100 WERE HIRED AT THE SAME TIME! #FAMU
The 1950& #39;s come through and we got a whole graduate school, Pharmacy School, and band. And our athletic program? Man, listen... #FAMU
FAMU& #39;s Football Coach Jake Gaither is a football mastermind. FSU, Ohio State, UF, and Alabama coaches travel to FAMU to learn from HIM.
#FAMU football is absolutely disrespectful. We out here thrashing schools 97-0. Oh hey @bethunecookman #BCC
That& #39;s just football. Track, tennis, and basketball are producing world class athletes. #FAMU produced a Gold medalist/Super Bowl champ.
Enter my fav period of FAMU history: The Gore years. #FAMU is a NATIONAL leader in the Civil Rights Movement. We out here puttin in WORK.
Stokely Carmichael came to #FAMU in & #39;68. The admin didn& #39;t want him. SGA snuck him in on a train overnight. This him in front of McGuinn Hall
1970& #39;s is all about a FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL. FSU takes law school in late 60& #39;s. The 70& #39;s, they got their eye on the whole damn campus. #FAMU
We organizing on ALL levels. Alum. Faculty. Students.. We in the backrooms puttin in work. "Let any man who speaks ill against #FAMU..."
