For those interested in temple architecture, a thread giving some basic info abt regional styles of Pre Islamic N. Indian Temple archi.
Before starting let me add that nomenclature for regional styles used here is based on medieval geography of India & our sacred scriptures.
Also go through this thread dealing with various modes of construction of Nagara temple architecture. https://twitter.com/vajrayudha11/status/805639674584764416
1) HIMAVAN - These mighty temples with pented roofs once dotted the snow clad valley of Kashmir. Now standing as a sad testimony of past. 😔
2) HIMADRI - Temples of W. Himalayan states of Himachal & Uttarakhand. By 7th/8th Century Nagara archi. had already arrived into mountains.
However more than Nagara stone temples, it is richly carved wooden temples which gives this tradition its distinct identity
Fortunately unlike neighboring Kashmir, Saffron flag is still fluttering & bells are still ringing in these ancient temple of Himalayas.
3) MADHYA DESA - Modern day UP. Sadly only ONE stone temple for an entire pre Islamic medieval period has managed to survive till present.😕
It has however some stunning brick temples probably dating back to the time of the Maukhari, Pushyabhuti & Pratihara rulers of Kannauj
4) MAGADHA DESA - Same situation as neighbouring UP. Mahabodhi temple and few other ruins are prob. the only remaining eg. of this style..
4) JEJAKABHUKTI - Corresponds to modern day Bundelkhand. Its famous temples of Khajuraho hardly requires any introduction!
Protected by the forests, these temples have miraculously survived till present to take us back to the heydays of Nagara temple architecture
5) DAHALA DESA - It corresponds to Jabalpur area, ruled by Kalachuris in medieval time. Not ambitious but not austere in scale either!
One temple of this tradition which deserves particular attention is Chausath (64) Yogini Temple at Bhedaghat. Amazing craftsmanship!
6) DAKSHINA KOSALA - Corresponds to Chattisgarh. These temple in the impenetrable jungles and on the banks of Mahanadi are testimony of
the Arya culture which once flourished & prospered in this land under benevolent rule of Nalas & Panduvamshis
7) DASARNA DESA -Eastern part of modern MP - site of the great ancient cities such as Gopagiri (Gwalior) and Vidisha. This tradition
started as simple yet ornate Mandapika shrines with elaborate Toranas during early medieval period. Under the patronage of Pratiharas &
...later on Kachhapghata rulers it witnessed impressive temples on ambitious scale such as Sas Bahu temple and Teli Ka Mandir at Gwalior.
8) MALWA - originally Western part of MP. But by medieval period it also included Dasarna Desa. Under illustrious rule of Paramara dynasty
...especially under the cultural patronage of Raja Bhoj it will devise its own separate mode of Nagara temple architecture known as Bhumija.
9) KALINGA DESA - This style requires no introduction. Thanks to the fact that it faced minimum wrath of Islamic iconoclasm it managed to
...flourish and produce some of the most ambitious temple projects of the time such as Konark, Jagannath Puri and Lingaraja temples!
10) SAINDHAVA/MAITRAKA - This temples from Saurashtra region of Gujarat are simple and austere but some of our earliest surviving temples.
11) MAHA GURJARA - This tradition developed mainly in North Gujarat from the culmination of various local traditions including Sanidhava.
12) MAHA MARU - As the name suggest genesis of this style lies in the local Gupta age variants of Nagara archi. of our great desert state.
13) MARU GURJARA - Eventually during the Solanki period both Maha Maru & Maha Gurjara would combine to give rise to this great tradition.
Thanks to the protection of Rajput rulers & patronage of Mercantile castes it will achieve new height while resisting the Islamic invasions.
Temple of Somnath among other things is an apt tribute to the 1000s of years of continuity of this great architectural tradition of W. India
14) HEMADPANTHI - Named after its founder - Hemadri Pandit - legendary prime minister of medieval Seunna Yadava dynasty of Maharashtra.
Suffered badly during Islamic rule. But thanks to the Hindvi Swaraj - Saffron is fluttering once again on these temples. 🙏
But it is not at the borders of Maharashtra that North Indian temple architecture takes its final stop! So last but not least...
15) KARNATA NAGARA: It is at early chalukya sites like Aihole, Badami and Patadakal at Karnataka that north finally meets south.
Will rest here with this ecstatic image of temples of Nagara and Dravida tradition lying side by side at Pattadakal, Karnataka....🙏
