Nerdy steam train Q: is it right that on some big long-distance engines there was a passage through the tender to give access to carriages?
I have the idea that there was in my head for some reason; I don't know whether it's actually true.

Pretty sure all British men secretly watch documentaries about historic steam trains behind their WAGs' backs...
My great-grandfather was the stationmaster of a small village station in the Welsh borders - I'd have enjoyed that, I think.

Very jealous. Really wish I'd done London - Rome a few years back, but chose to fly because of £. Poor choice by me in retrospect.
It was pre-children *and* I was travelling alone, really feels like a missed opportunity now. Ah well, when the kids are bigger...
