6 steps to becoming laser focused on demand:

- A Thread -
1. Choose your task

You don’t need the right task to be focused, you can focus on absolutely anything

BUT

Our deep focus is limited each day, so we don’t want to waste this resource on the wrong task.

Choose something that is tough, that will move you towards your goals.
2. Prep your environment

Start by tidying your work space.

A messy desk creates a messy mind and a tidy desk creates a tidy mind.
We want a tidy mind so that we have clarity when working, so that you have as few stray thoughts running around your mind as possible

Grab some water and a coffee, and be prepared to stay planted for a while.
3. Destroy Distractions

Turn off your phone, tell family, colleagues or whoever might interrupt you that you’re unavailable for a few hours.

It can take around 15 - 30 minutes to get fully focused on a task
So each time you get interrupted, you’re wasting 15 - 30 minutes getting refocused.

Remember, prevention is better than cure.
4. Set the mood

Create a focus playlist.

Whether you use 40hz binaural beats, Hans Zimmer or some Jazz, just make sure that your music has no words.

Instrumentals are brilliant for helping you get into a flow state and essentially work with the music, words ruin this.
5. Set your time restrictions

Remember how I said that our deep focus is finite?

Well, we have around 4 hours of this laser level focus each day

So set aside up to 4 hours of your day to get into this deep focus and knock off your high level tasks.
You don’t have to do all 4 hours in one block, but I wouldn’t advise splitting it up into more than 4 blocks.

As if you’re doing 4 one hour focus blocks, it might take you 30 minutes to get focused, meaning 2 out of your 4 hours were not deep focused work.
6. Start

You’ve chosen the task, prepped your environment, removed distractions, created a focus playlist and you know how long you’re working for

All that's left is to start

Commit yourself, become obsessed with this one task, treat it as if it’s your life's work and focus
BONUS TIPS:

- Stare at a small point for 30 - 60 seconds before starting to work: visual focus creates cognitive focus

- If possible have your screen slightly above eye level and even tilted towards you: forcing your eyes to look up triggers neurons that increase alertness
