I've spent 750+ hours coaching managers and executives to become more impactful leaders.

Here are 7 quick lessons to level up your leadership skills:
1/ Say no often

Focus is expensive. It's the most precious commodity in your business. Great leaders let their teams focus.

Great companies aren't made by saying yes.

They're made by saying no.
2/ Focus on outcomes, not outputs

Exceptional leaders care deeply about results. They care less about the how, or the where.

They create environments where people can do their best work.

That also means respecting boundaries.
3/ Know what you don't know

Exceptional leaders know that they'll never be as close to the work as their teams will be.

A great leader seeks out regular contact with daily practitioners to show respect for the work, and to learn what problems they see.
4/ Optimize for team performance

Great leaders don't tolerate "brilliant jerks."

They are wise enough to know that a brilliant jerk can prevent a team from performing, regardless of how brilliant they are.

There's no space for someone who chooses to work without respect.
5/ Match autonomy with accountability

They trust that their teams are the experts.

And being an expert means getting to call the shots.

Their teams have the ownership and autonomy to pick projects, but also a high expectation to be accountable for results.
6/ Be decisive

There are a lot of dead squirrels in the middle of the road who couldn't make up their mind to go left or right.

Most business decisions are reversible.

If they don't have the information or expertise necessary to make a decision, they go to their teams.
7/ Own your mistakes

Great leaders will admit when they messed up.

They don't try to spin a bad decision as something that was "too early" or "too innovative."

They cut the BS, apologize, take responsibility, and move on.
