Looking at our hands, we need to wake up.

Our hands are considered to house the goddess Laxmi, Saraswati, and Lord Vishnu, thus looking at them first thing in the morning ensures that you receive the blessings of all three gods
This prayer is used in the Hindu way of life upon waking up in the morning while sitting on the bed:

कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मिः करमध्ये सरस्वति ।
करमूले तु गोविन्दः प्रभाते करदर्शनम् ॥
The idea is straightforward: your handwork determines your knowledge, power, and money.

KarAgre = in the front of the hand i.e. fingers; vasate = lives;

Lakshmi = the divinity of prosperity (material and spiritual) [from the word lakShya = goal];
Kara-madhye Saraswati = in the middle of the palm; lives the divinity of learning, and knowledge;

Kara-moole Govinda= in the wrist lives the universal guide of righteousness - Krishna.
Every morning, people should look at all of these holy characters so that they might have a more enlightened day.
The second section of the prayer is added to have us sit for longer:

Samudra vasane devi;
parvatha sthana mandale;

vishnu pathni namasthubhyam
paada sparsham kshamaswame.
The meaning is straightforward: Oh! Mother Earth, you are the bride of Lord Mahavishnu, and the mountains are a portion of your body. Is it okay if I offer you my pranam?
While praying these lines, the heart is allowed nearly 60 seconds of leisure to change the state of work from a lesser load to a larger load, and the heart becomes acclimated to this.
