So, as a daily player of BF2042 on the PS4, I have seen many issues and changes made in the last months, and I know it gets a lot of criticism, but
it’s still great fun. There are a number of things that still confuse me and my fellow Battlefielders though, so I wanted to examine some points that still need sorting out. And this has nothing to do with the specialists, or any weapons.
When you start a game, if it lets you
When you start a game, if it lets you
that is (I still hear that friends on the PS5 version can’t get a game often, so they play with me on the PS4 version instead) you have a wait while the map default view loads, and then the player cards appear. There may be another long wait for players to join – why? I thought
the whole point of there being AI in the game, was to run a full server, and let real players take the place of AI as they joined, not keep us waiting until a minimum real player count has been reached, which seems to be around 16 players needed before it will give the 30 second
countdown (glad you added that bit) to start. Now, in previous Battlefield games, at this point we could be choosing our soldier and loadout, why can’t we be doing this in BF2042?
Next comes the map screen, where finally we can actually sort our loadouts, with another countdown

before spawning on the map. Unless you have chosen a vehicle, which is not always possible, as some appear between the spawn point and vehicle selection button, making it glitch and be un-selectable as the on screen elements interfere with each other, we then go into what can
only be described as a poor, low poly, completely pointless and often glitched animation, where a bunch of blurry blow-up doll versions of our characters run, or try and jump off a carrier. We do not need this part at all.
We can not choose to spawn in a squad mate’s vehicle, or at (in the case of Breakthrough games) the home spawn, or possibly 2 flag points, unless we immediately sacrifice a life and hit redeploy. This should be improved, so we don’t have to run a mile to get in the squad tank.
Boots on the ground finally, I run, often with no hands or feet, still looking like a blow-up doll until the graphics kick in, (surely this could all be preloaded while we wait, so it’s fully rendered from the start) only to get blown up straight away by an enemy aircraft.
You can’t get a vehicle near an opponents home spawn, so why allow aircraft to? It’s 2042, we have landed with troops and all manner of vehicles, ready for battle yet we don't have anti-air defence units that would destroy any vehicles coming too close? I mean you would, right?
So, I’ve died and I want to choose a spawn location, and later in the game this could be at any number of flags, squadmates, insertion beacons, or vehicles, so I tap my stick left, left, no left goddam it!
Up, left, up, up, why the hell can’t I select that point???? It’s a frustratingly bad selection system – can you please just change it to a curser that will move smoothly around the screen?
Now we’re in the game, “Oh, this is different in the bigger maps.” says a PS5 mate

Have you not equally changed elements in the PS4 version too? I understand graphically, there is some kind of poly count limitation, it affects rendering and processing power, but all in-game assets should be the same in both versions, surely?
Maps, yes they have many open spaces, which work in some areas, but not others. Everything is too clean, more crap needs adding. There are wrecked, or abandoned cars here and there, but not many, but only on flags or roads. In this future world, things would be all over the place
, especially after a tornado has passed through. Now, I’m no tornado expert, but I’m fairly sure they don’t work like vacuum cleaners, they pick stuff up, like pretty much all the small buildings on Hourglass, and vanish. These buildings, among the few in the game that can be
demolished, are multi-part assets, so they can be destroyed and collapse. Why not have these parts be randomly thrown from the tornado as it moves, to rain down on the map like meteorites? How cool would it be to be saved by a random chunk of building obliterating the tank that
was just about to kill you as you struggle to reload your M5 launcher? Oh what, too complicated? Perhaps if more development time was put into things like that, instead of animating the swirling, dancing bin bags all over the place, it would be better.
I mean honestly, who
I mean honestly, who
decided to waste time on that? It’s 2042, two decades away, and we are at war with plastics today. Plastic bags should be pretty much irradicated by then, right?
Vehicles - Selection, availability, their strengths and weaknesses, it is what it is. But there should be more!

You have 3 types of vehicle that you can only get on map – Tuk-tuk, of which there are only 3 on Kaleidoscope – I reckon you should add loads more, and they would work around Orbital too. The quad bike, 1 solitary bike on Orbital, and a few on Renewal. I mean, if you didn’t give
us beach buggys for Hourglass, the least you could do is throw a dozen quad bikes in the desert for us. The 4x4 found twice on Discarded and Renewal. Again, these would work on Hourglass and all the other maps too.
The glaring omission in this game is Snowmobiles for Breakaway.

My main gripe about these vehicles is that they self destruct after a minute if you get out of them. They should remain on the map wherever they are put, until someone blows them up, then they can respawn.
General gameplay – What’s Hazard Zone? Does anyone even play it? Really, just give us proper map rotation, including the BF3 maps as standard, and a choice between Conquest, Breakthrough and Rush, that is all we need. Everything else should either be full XP official portal games
, or fun zombie hunt type games. You seem to have lost your enthusiasm for having a laugh in the weekly extras. And as for the challenges, they need more variety from the usual kill/resupply/spot/get ribbons, and add other things like drive a certain distance, wingsuit to a
specific point, find X number of radios, find hidden icons, something to make them more interesting.
I wasn’t going to mention weapons, but melee weapons, could we have some larger variety and a choice as part of our loadout, rather than it being a choice of takedown animations

that just slow things down? I do miss the glorious head cracking sounds of taking someone out with a spade in BF1.
I will continue to enjoy it as it is regardless, but I do hope someone will listen to us, the Battlefield fans.
