I went from 40 to 40,000 followers in six months.

I can't keep up with the DMs asking how.

So here's my step-by-step process:
1/ Just start

If you write something terrible, no one sees it anyway.

The same as not writing but with massive upside.

So just start. Take some risks.

-> Tweet a cool quote.
-> Make a one-liner you heard today.
-> Connect a meme or GIF to a current event.

Just get reps.
2/ Get smart

I took 2 courses. Both were excellent:

Audience Building
(w/ @SahilBloom & @blakeaburge )

Maker's Mark
(w/ @brandonthezhang & @aaditsh )

Here's what you get:

-> Proven tactics
-> Sustainable systems
-> Live, direct feedback
-> And...
3/ Your tribe

Find 5-10 people who want to build their community just like you.

Ideally, you comment, like, and even RT each other's stuff.

Pick a standard time to dial back notifications.

Best part: It's all positive-sum growth.

When they win, you win.
4/ Intersecton >> Lane

Common advice: niche down.

Find a lane and stay in it.

Better advice: find an intersection

I learned from this @heykahn

-> He focuses on marketing + psychology.
-> I aim at leadership + systems.

Which you'll find on my...
5/ Profile

Get this right early.

The bio: what will I get if I follow + proof you're credible to give it

The header: visually attractive & extra space to tell your story

The avatar: distinct & human (except Web3, then NFT = cred)

Shoot for 50% profile conversion.
6/ Watch the Data

I keep it simple:

-> Tweet engagement
-> Profile conversion rate

I use engagement to figure out what topics & approaches work.

I use profile conversion* to see if people want to sign up to see more.

*Followers = social proof, so this # should be increasing
7/ Write threads

I'm not clever enough to write viral one-liners.

Try:

-> Hooks need emotion, mystery or utility
-> Formatting & white space matter
-> One ask at the end (RT or follow)

Avoid:

-> @ more than 3-4 in a tweet (never in the hook)
-> Links often get blocked
8/ Try a curation

Don't underestimate the power of sharing good resources:

-> Best of's (books, pods, newsletters)
-> Weeklies (tweets at your intersection)
-> Top follows (include why & examples)

Need Inspiration: @MakadiaHarsh & @abhishekshah173
9/ Research a story

Chances your audience read that insightful article: almost 0

-> Retell it in your own words
-> Draw out unique lessons or insights
-> Always cite & @ h/t the references for credit

Need Inspiration: @TrungTPhan & @barrettjoneill
10/ Use tools

I started simple:

Notion -> Track ideas
Typefully -> Draft threads
Grammarly -> Spellcheck & tone

But then I copy/paste it into the native app to post.

Sound painful?

It is, but not as painful wasting good writing on a technical hiccup or spelling error.
11/ Engage more

3 x 5 x 2

3 - levels (step ahead, lockstep, step behind)
5 - people at each level
2 - both sides of your intersection

-> Turn on alerts & engage regularly.
-> If you form a relationship: share your stuff.
-> Crickets? Swap them out for someone active.
12/ DM like a human

Hello? Automatic delete.

What works for me:

Be brief, be valuable, be patient.

-> Brief: it's good practice, get to the point
-> Valuable: show up adding value, not asking for it
-> Patient: it's a relationship, not a transaction

Amplify the Golden Rule
13/ Be consistent

Post every day.

-> Tip, tactic, hot take - keep the algo primed.

-> Acknowledge thoughtful responses.

-> Same time, each day: match your audience's routine.

-> Write in blocks & schedule for efficiency using your...
14/ Content system

What do you need?

-> Stimulus: Curated sources of inspiration
-> Capture: Inspiration strikes. Write it down
-> Polish: Edit for grammar & spelling
-> Publish: Schedule, auto-RT, and auto-plugs

After 3 months, abstract the winners into...
15/ Templates

Every day, millions of tweets are being tested:

Form + Content

-> Never copy content
-> Find top performers w/ TwemexApp
-> Mad-lib good formats with your new words

@JustinSaaS built a nutrient-dense course that showed me how:
https://www.justinwelsh.me/a/2147507660/m2PLFL2E
16/ Wait to monetize

It is super easy to offer a course or ebook.

But just give it away tweet by tweet.

Sound insane?

2 good things happen:

-> Your biggest fans will still pay for you to put it all together.
-> Your community improves the quality of your ideas.

Win-win
17/ Diversify

I'm all-in on Twitter, but that's risky.

So I'm re-running the above playbook on LinkedIn, with one change:

Write once, publish twice.

I get leverage from HypeFury:

-> Keep advanced Twitter features
-> While cross-publishing to LinkedIn

The TLDR Roadmap:

1/ Just Start
2/ Get Smart
3/ Build Your Tribe
4/ Find Your Intersection
5/ Profile
6/ Watch Data
7/ Write Threads
8/ Curate
9/ Tell Stories
10/ Upgrade Tools
11/ Engage
12/ DM Well
13/ Consistency
14/ Systemize
15/ Templatize
16/ Monetize
17/ Diversify
With 300 million people on Twitter and you probably think you're too late.

I thought the same 6 months ago. You're still early. Just start.
