#xicheng for lema

jwy has fallen in love with lxc. what he doesn't know is that lxc isn't real, he's been dead for years
the first time they saw each other was when lxc welcomed the jiang disciples into gusu. The man smiled kindly at jc and although he found it really heart warming for some reason, he didn't think much of it...

What he didn't know was that it'd be the last time seeing him as well.
Some weeks later he was taking a stroll around Gusu when he tripped on a rock. Yet before he could kiss the floor someone held him by the collar of his robes and pulled him up.

He was about to cuss at whoever just spoked him like that when he was greeted w/ the kindest of smiles
"Ah! Crap- I mean thanks!" He basically jumped away in embarrassment while dusting off his clothes. "I didn't notice you approaching!" He gave him a deep bow. "Thank you, I guess."

Lan Xichen chuckled with amusement and shook his head. "No need for such formalities."
"Eh? No, no." Not the Lan telling him to quit being so uptight!! He's playing by his rules! He won't fall for this trap. "This is just normal etiquette."

When he straightened his back he was once again greeted with a smile, but this time it was more mischievous.
"Is young master implying that my etiquette isn't proper?"

Damn it! He got him there. "Don't twist my words, please... Ah, I haven't seen you in a while. Has your nighthunt gone well?"

Lxc's smile doesn't fade.
"Changing the subject?" He giggled but covered his mouth with his sleeve. "Ah, I'm afraid it didn't work out as planned. Mostly everyone got home safely so I feel content."

For some reason that JWY wasn't able to understand until later on, this sentence made him shiver.
Some days went by until they saw each other again, and from then on they'd spend some good time together.

Whenever Jiang Wanyin asked him about his weird availability Xichen just laughed his questions off.

JC wasn't particularly lonely but it felt nice having
someone like him around. He was just chill. And surprisingly funny.

Not in a Wei Wuxian way. Lan Xichen made him laugh without jokes, he was genuinely hilarious. The way he would be an absolute menace to society whenever he attempted to do a basic task that didn't involve
cultivation, how he'd talk to him about the most boring Lan stuff but make it interesting and light-hearted and oh, LXC absolutely loved to gossip.

It's like he really knew everything about everyone! Like he had ears everywhere.
"You're so knowledgeable... Then tell me something you know about me."

Lan Xichen looked at him in surprise but quickly got to thinking. "Hm... You really like dogs?"

"Too vague. EVERYONE likes dogs."

"Your brother doesn't?"

"... anyone with a heart."
"You... Are a good swimmer."

"Oh come on! You know everything, there's no way you really cannot think of anything deeper." He said, sort of annoyed.

"I'm only willing to learn what you're willing to tell me. And gossip about us heirs does not tend to be flattering."
He made a good point there.

"I guess..." He laid down on the grass and looked at the clouds above. "Ah, I don't know. I don't think I'm that interesting. But I bet if you asked that peacock to talk about himself he wouldn't stop even when the seasons change..."

+
"I've learned something now."

Jiang Cheng looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "About the peacock?"

"About you?" He smiled at him, a smile that made his heart skip a beat. "You're terrible at evaluating your own worth."

This made Jiang Wanyin's cheeks go red. Isn't he bold!?
He turned his back on him, sort of sulking. "Says the one who chooses to spend time with me."

"Because I'm clearly better at recognising your value."

"You–!"
They spent an unhealthy amount of time from then on together and although JC would never admit it, he was beginning to get too used to Lan Xichen's compliments and warmth... Reality interpreted by Lan Xichen felt much more bearable.

He thought that maybe nothing really could
be that unbearable if he had Lan Xichen by his side.

Until, of course, he returned to Yunmeng.
During the time he had been away from Lan Xichen he had realised what sort of feelings he had for him. He denied them at first but when he had lost everything there was one person he wanted to run too.

He was ashamed of his feelings, he wanted to ignore them but it was
difficult. He longed for safety, he hated Lan Xichen for not being there, he hated himself for caring.

He despised his own immaturity.

He had gathered a decent amount of disciples he went to Gusu for the first time in a while. Every Sect Leader was there, including Lan Xichen.
He was proud of himself for making the others see how Yunmeng Jiang was still standing even with their home burnt down, he felt accomplished.

After he left the meeting he was surprised to see Lan Xichen waiting for him.

Was he not just inside?
"Sect Leader Jiang," he said with a ... Proud smile? "It's good to see you well. My condolences, I know your family meant a lot to you."

"When did you come back? I heard Lan Wangji had to defend the Library by himself... No one talked about you."

Despite the harsh words Xichen
kept the smile on his face. "I'm unable to help."

"Even then!" Why was he so mad? "They needed you. Even if-"

"Jiang Cheng, are you mad at me?"

"No! Why would I be?" He threw his hands in the air. "Fuck, maybe I am! I'm sorry, ok? I don't know what's wrong with me..."
He chuckled bitterly. "Shit... I was doing so well... It's just..."

Why did this always happen? Whenever he was with this man it seemed like he was unable to lie or fake anything. It's like Lan Xichen wasn't talking to him, he was talking to his soul directly. Playing that
weird melody... Is it inquiry? But instead of using an instrument he used that dumb face and stupid voice.

Shit.

"I'm being immature." He tried to regain some posture and gave him a bow. "My apologies, Sect Leader-"

"No, don't." LXC took a step closer and stopped his bow.
"It's just you and me, don't change our relationship. Don't call me Sect Leader, I am not one. Just like you're my friend."

"It's embarrassing." He admitted with a bitter smile.

"It isn't. I'm relieved." Xichen smiled and opened his arms, going in for a hug.
"I was afraid you'd seal your heart away after so much-"

However, before Lan Xichen could wrap his arms around him, JWY gave a step back.

"Don't."

He couldn't allow this to happen again. He wasn't a kid, he was a sect leader and his people relied on him. Allowing
Lan Xichen to get close and break down his walls was something he could not allow.

LXC makes him weak.

"My apologies, Sect Leader Lan. My disciples are waiting for me." He nodded and walked past him.

He couldn't see Lan Xichen's pained expression but he could feel
his eyes on him.

Surprisingly, it didn't hurt as much as he thought it would.

He's gotten used to it by now.
