Did you notice the 7 figure mistake that multiple companies made during the Superbowl?

If you were watching the commercials, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

If you weren’t, well, this thread is for you.

Read this and don’t make the same mistake.

THREAD
Yes, it was a 7 figure mistake. You read that right.

If you could RT this to spread the word and help marketers learn not to do this, you’d be saving the world billions of future dollars.

Did you do it?

Awesome, thanks. Let’s jump in.
According to NBC, one 30 second ad spot during the Superbowl costs $7 million, but for some companies, they paid a LOT more than that.

For no reason.

More than half of the commercials we saw likely cost over $10 million.

Wanna know why?
Obviously, production cost. These commercials weren’t filmed on an iPhone. Most of these cost $1-1.5M to make.

Also, celebrity appearances. These are $2M+.

It cost somebody $2M for you to see Dolly Parton pull an iPhone 13 Pro out of her bra.

Does this even make sense?
You probably think:
“Yeah, of course, that’s brand awareness. It’s memorable.”

Was it though?

Or was it a complete waste of money?

Let’s ask Coinbase.
Coinbase spent about the same amount of money as T-Mobile for TWICE the amount of time – a 60 second bouncing QR code.

And it worked.

20M hits on their LP in one minute, went from #186 to #2 in the App Store that night.

The point is this…
Spending $2M on macro influencers/celebrities is an absolute waste of money.

“That’s weird, coming from the influencer marketing guy.”

It would be weird, but this is NOT influencer marketing. This is just needless flexing.

If you gave me a $2M budget, here’s how I’d spend it…
Let’s pretend the COGS of your hero product is $40.

That means you could potentially get 50,000 micro influencers in your niche to post content for you.

Besides that being a CRAZY number of influencers that most brands don’t even need, you’ll also receive:
- Better videos from talented creators
- Content that feels genuine, not forced
- A relationship with an influencer that’ll allow you to get more content in the future

You’ll be in a better position than these companies that blow 8 figures on a 30 second ad spot.
Most people will take inspiration from big companies that have advertising budgets that would dwarf your annual revenue.

Don’t get distracted by their decisions.

It doesn’t make sense for them, so it doesn’t make sense for you.

There are BETTER ways to spend money.
Macro influencers are for vanity.

Micro influencers are for performance and high-quality creatives.

People see a superbowl ad and say “wow that’s wild” while they grab another slice of pizza.

People see a high-quality organic Instagram story and take out their credit card.
Am I way off? I don’t think so.

I no longer envy companies that advertise just for the sake of brand, because I know there are more profitable ways to spend $2M.
