How to prepare for an unknown future (without glowing)

If you've moved to a rural or suburban area, you should create a volunteer disaster response group.

Think of it like a volunteer fire department, but only called out for bigger events.
You want guys trained to respond to things like floods, wild fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, and chemical spills.

You need a group of guys, ideally 18-55, who practice together. You need an organization chart. You need a phone tree.
For finding guys like this, I'd look at places like farmer's markets, gun clubs/ranges, hiking groups, or just any group of Heartland Americans.
You'll want equipment. Things like chainsaws and 4WD trucks. High resolution maps of the area. Radios, first aid kits, chains, sandbags and flood lights.
It'll be important to develop skills. You'll want everyone trained in first aid, radio use, hand and power tools, and specific disaster skills. That will eventually expand out into chemical training, terrain navigation, and heavy equipment operation, if you can.
You'll want to run drills. A good example would be "Hey, flood drill this weekend"

That Saturday, everyone shows up and practices filling sandbags as fast as possible and laying them to prevent a flood.
Or fell a tree across a private road, then practice clearing that tree as fast as you can.
Practicing all of the EMS skills would be great for disaster response.
A lot of basics of these skills can be learned from a book, but you need to practice them. You don't want to be figuring out the fine points to them during a disaster. And learning how to do stuff is great for building a sense of brotherhood.
You'll probably want to lay some ground rules, like "No political talk during drills or meetings" and the normie version of "no fedposting". Remember, this is an organization designed to make your township or county a better place
And once you have a group established and everyone gets to know each other, you should find ways to give back to your community, as a group. Something like a college scholarship for local kids would be great.
That might go something like "Hey Randal, your kid still thinking about being a veterinarian? It's a good degree, but jeeze isn't college expensive these days....
You know, she probably qualifies for our scholarship, why don't you come over and have a beer or two and we'll see if she does. Anyway, you still thinking about that run for Sheriff next election?"
You should make sure that you get in touch with local PD and the fire department, so that you can organize with them if theres a really big disaster.
Even better to do like the Elks Club used to do and come together every now and then to help clean up an area or hold a food drive. Anything that helps the community and builds ties between them and you is a good thing.
This group also let's you have a brotherhood of friends. Apart from drills and meetings, you can also make friends and hang out in the weekends to go shooting or drink beer or just hang out and talk about the state of the world.
And when some unforseen future disaster shows up, you'll already have a team of trained guys, who know each other and work together well, ready to respond to it, whatever it is.
I'll be adding good feedback, suggestions, and extra ideas below.
