My first technical article was 2 years ago.

Since then I wrote more than 50 technical articles for my blog and for businesses.

If you want to start technical writing, here's what you need to know.👇

A thread. 🧵
1️⃣ - You don't need to be an expert to start writing

When I've started writing, my biggest first was judgment.

How do you overcome it?

Take technical writing as a way to learn.

Did you learn how to write a function in JavaScript?

1/2
Write an article about it and share.

Did you build a fullstack app with React & Django?

Write an article about how you made it.

You'll be surprised by the number of people who are struggling with basics or complex concepts.

2/2
2️⃣ - Don't write about everything

The common mistake for beginners is to write about everything.

Thankfully, I had great mentors who warned me about this mistake.

Choose your niche (JavaScript, PHP, Python, etc) and write about it.

1/2
With time, people will consider you as an expert in your domain.

2/2
3️⃣ - Be consistent

Find your own pace.

it's possible to write an article every day. (check @flaviocopes)

But if you are starting right away, try to stick to one article per week.

And when you are well established in your niche, one article per month.
4️⃣ - Develop your technical writing skills

- Develop strong writing skills: the ability to write clear and simple English. Grammarly is a great tool to have.

- Research skills (books, documentation, articles, etc.)

- Ability to read and understand code

1/2
- Problems solving skills: figure the best way to communicate complex topics

- Basic knowledge about SEO
5️⃣ - Just Start

Choosing to become a technical writer is definitely great, but putting in the required work to get started is even greater.

Choose one topic.

Write about it and share it.
