In 2021 a professor at the university I attend is teaching misinformation about residential schools. A Thread:

My professor gave us a work sheet to look over and read after class and I seen a statement that said “positives and negatives of residential schools”

I could not believe what I was reading, and there was no further information so I sent her an email asking to explain.

Her first response was to just brush over it because we didn’t go through it in class, and because the work sheet was also mostly about education.

I wanted further clarification because as an Indigenous student I was appalled this was being taught and then she brushed over when I ask for further info.

This is when things took a horribly dark turn and after reading her response I cried. I just want to be clear, this is an Indigenous professor teaching this in an intro to Indigenous studies course

So she is saying we were filthy and didn’t know how to clean? She is saying that my mom willingly learned english and willingly lost our language. My ancestors were master seamstresses, we knew how to cook and sew. Of course I had to respond to the previous email.

And this is where she tried to gaslight me.

After the last email, I was so emotional and so upset I wrote a pretty long email but decided against sending it because I feel like I already made her mad, and I still had a couple months left of the semester.

This was the hardest class to sit through after that email exchange and I quit participating. What really bugged me the most is that there were non-Indigenous students in that class that actually wanted to learn the truth without it being sugar coated

9/10
and they didn’t get that. There will also be students who take this info into the world and hold it as truth because it came from an Indigenous professor. I went to the student advocacy office and they touted freedom of education.
