1/ Solar & Wind are 0 emissions?

Each 1 MW of solar farm power requires between 35 to 45 tons of steel,
+ you need to dig for cadmium, gallium, germanium, indium, selenium, and tellurium

Make silicon
Silicon metal is made from the reaction of silica (SiO2)

#YootDigme
2/ and carbon materials like coke, coal, and wood chips. (High CO2)

On average 1 MW of wind capacity requires:
103 tonnes of stainless steel,
402 tonnes of concrete,
6.8 tonnes of fiberglass,
3 tonnes of copper
and 20 tonnes of cast iron.

With what you produce
3/ steel, concrete, etc?
Big machines dig it and ships transport it running on Diesel.
You bake steel or concrete using Coal or Gas.

Don't forget about wind turbine parts replacements.

Approximately 50% of emissions from cement production come not from energy provision,
4/ but from chemical reactions in its production.

Even if you switch to “green” hydrogen:
in country like Germany, UK this will use marginal emissions which are 500-550g CO2/kWh

Zero Emissions? Are you sure?
5/ Wind: “Tens of thousands of aging blades are coming down from steel towers around the world and most have nowhere to go but landfills.”

Wind: “Nearly 14 million trees have been chopped down across Scotland to make way for wind turbines.”
6/ Solar: ”Tons of lead and cadmium are used (toxic materials). By 2016 photovoltaics/Solar had distributed around 11,000 tons of lead and around 800 tons of cadmium."
7/ "Everyday operation of wind turbines requires fossil fuels for lubrication. Avg 5 MW turbine contains several hundred gallons of oil and hydraulic fluid the transformer at the base of each turbine may contain another 500 gallons. Avg: 700 gallons. To be replaced periodically"

9/ Hydropower: "dams emit about a billion tonnes of greenhouse gases every year". Large CH4

Kills lots of fish & biodiversity. Sustainable & green? Sure! (Thread)

thread:

we do not need to put a green label on things, products.

we must remove it.

there is no such thing as:
clean energy,
green energy,
free energy,
sustainable,
net-zero,
renewables.

after removal we will see just one word:

overconsumption

17/ That moment when I see that solar panels will cover rivers:

"However, most fish require around 12 hours of light a day. Fish such as goldfish will lose their color without light, and some fish may stop eating, become lethargic or become ill without sufficient lighting."
18/ You can google for quotes used. It's easy (thread):

"Each new MW of solar power requires between 35 to 45 tons of steel" - they talk about solar farms.

A short video to see why:
19/ Capacity factors for wind & solar and how many renewables days are in the year?
(spoiler: 25-35 from 365, other days are dirty, thread:) 1/2
20/ 2020 Electricity emissions per country day by day.

How many green days/squares you see for UK, Denmark?

These are so-called renewables days in media
🇦🇹🇧🇪🇩🇪🇩🇰🇪🇸🇫🇷🇬🇧🇮🇹🇳🇱🇵🇹🇸🇪

Are majority yellow and orange, dark orange days?
Why media tells us only about exceptions? Hmmm
21/ While fighting with one dirty fossils fuels dinosaur,
we didn't spot another bigger fossil materials dinosaur enjoying this in the room.

"No one, not even within the industry, would deny that mining lithium causes enormous environmental damage" - DW: https://twitter.com/DeutscheWelle/status/1382357219551940609
22/ this big business just makes you think theres a fight with the fossils industry. not at all, it's imitation, PR

the fight has not yet started

there are two heads: fossil fuels & fossil materials

follow only those who address both

it's not just coal

lithium is the new oil
23/ Why "green" hydrogen won't save us?

"Other missing 10% in your huge house are now replaced with heavy CO2 oil/gas/coal."
24/ We need to seriously think about reduction and sharing, one of the examples for a reduction in this thread: 1/2
25/ Do we need batteries for the computer if we can plug it into the electric socket?

Do we need mobile phones? Are we all saving lives?

1993 wasn't a stone age. It was a good age.

With good movies & good people

To create dependence on batteries simply doesn't have any sense.
26/ We should think about reduction and sharing, one of the examples for sharing in this thread:

There’re 1.4B cars in the world

We can use them much more efficiently

Expand carsharing, carpooling, and other car reuse/rent ideas:
27/ Many believe in magic words like "recycling".

Reality: 1st step is to Reduce. Above is last step.

If we take batteries, recycling them is energy-dense

& they are not designed to be recycled.

9% of plastic is recycled. Batteries will be better?
28/ Recycling electric car battery greenwashing is a new trend:

"Unfortunately, recycling processes consume considerable amounts of electrical and thermal energies"

29/ The first step in the circular economy is Reduce and Share.

Recycling is the last measure
