I've come to realize that I no longer care about being in a movie theater with other people. know why? because a good portion of "other people" are sleazy, selfish, fuckheads. I don't need to be in a "communal experience" with pricks and assholes.
whenever I go to a local theater I have to deal with talkers, phones, and distractions. I just want to watch a movie. it's better when I'm in Austin and I go to a Drafthouse, but I'm not traveling anytime soon. so I'm screwed on that front too.
people used to whisper in movie theaters. like it was a library. but ever since movies became readily available in your living room, people have been gradually more rotten in theaters. because they're used to watching movies in their living room.
I will always love movies. not sure I'll always love movie theaters, and that bums me out.
the irony is that the big theater chains DO NOT CARE if your movie night is ruined by cell phones and chit chat. Once you spend some money they just don't care. if a chain like AMC focused more on "be considerate of other people" in their marketing, then I'd feel like they care.
it's something theater chains are going to have to address eventually. I bet a good portion of movie fans "wait for dvd/streaming" for that one simple reason: it's dumb to spend money on a movie=watching experience that might be good, or it might be terrible.
hire Jack Black. the script goes like this "hey, everyone. you all spent money to be here, so let's do what we can to allow everyone to enjoy the movie. don't talk, don't text, and don't be a defensive jerk if someone mentions it. you didn't drop $30 to have a shitty night."
