The doctrine of evangelical Christianity hinges on personal salvation, yes; but SO much of its modern praxis concerns how Christians see themselves in relation to other people.
Being “in the world” but not “of it” requires you to have a firm grasp of what that means, what it looks like, and to constantly compare yourself to an out-group to maintain your own sense of self.
You know who you are because you are not like Them. You know who They are because they don’t look like you.
Your reward for not living or looking like Them is supposed to be a better, more abundant life than they have.

And in this context, “pick me” makes sense, as does the vitriol they have toward people who prosper in love despite “bad” behavior.
