So much of what he is saying chimes with what I’ve observed over last 15 months of doing an in-depth pub ethnography.

Why is the left & sociology so scared of listening to what people have to say – after all isn’t that what we’re meant to be doing?
The reality is that people I talk to – trades people on £30k (not that much in London) & small business owners struggling to survive – don’t give a shit what academia/left-wing media has to say because they use complicated political theory to essentially tell them they’re thick.
These people’s concerns aren’t being listen to because academia/left wing media has already decided to dismiss them (because everyone has that awkward ukip voting uncle) so you think you understand them – so believe you can simply ignore them.
While you obsess over whether a wax moustache baristas is more working class then a trades person with a small businesses employing 2 people, these people are laying awake at night worrying about their: children’s future, mortgage, survival of their businesses & care home costs.
The more you treat them with judgmental predisposed contempt, the further you’ll push them to the right. Not because they’re thick, bigoted, racists – as so many have been quick to label them – but because you’ve repelled them away from any constructive engagement with the left
