When we made “THE VOTE” as a wee election night TV drama, the concept that moved me most in the research was how our democracy is all based on trust. And when you trust people it’s rewarded. There is no voter fraud problem in the UK. Altering that social contract is abhorrent /1
Those defending it with examples of how presenting ID is perfectly normal haven’t even got that point right👇🏻 /2
Those giving the “Red Bull” example betray their case. ID is needed for booze, fags & yes Red Bull in order to REPRESS & REDUCE the access to it. And it works! You *seriously* want to repress & reduce the ability to vote in the same way? To solve a problem that doesn’t exist? /3
I strongly dislike the trend of implying moral inferiority onto those we disagree with. You can have different opinions without being “bad”. But this, on the left & right, is “bad”. And should be especially seen so by libertarian conservatives who believe in freedoms & trust / 4
Boris Johnson was right to vote against ID Cards 12 times when in opposition. Nothing has changed to support the case now he’s in power. Even if this law stops just 1 person lawfully voting (it’ll be more) how can any moral democrat support this, for a problem that doesn’t exist.
