Why couldn't Hampi regain its glory and richness again ?

A 🧵

The destruction of Hampi wasn't just a simple loot that mostly took place within medieval era.

But rather a complete setback for India at the scale equivalent of the Nalanda destruction.

1/7
It had taken hampi more than 50 years to become one of the the most important metropolitans of the medieval world, and it was now reduced to ashes.

The temples and houses, the streets and markets burned for over 6 months.

2/7
By that time people had settled at pendukotta and were secured.

When the capital city of an empire burns, then the heart of an empire is gone.

3/7
Many small but strong local leaders called as nayaks carved out their own kingdom from the revenants of the older empire which made it even more difficult for the Metropolitan to be set.

Tirumala raya did his best to rebuild the great city, but it was all in vain.

4/7
People's hope to resettle back had been shattered and the glorious empire of Vijayanagar was but a shadow of its former self.

Slowly and slowly by the decades, the idea of Hampi was also forgotten like ancient and glorious kingdoms.

5/7
It was a brutal reminder of a city which was so high in the sky that when it fell, it could never rise up again.

6/7
Where once great temples sprawled now dirt resides. Where pearls and jewels were sold on streets, carcasses of animals rot.

The legendary city which was compared to Rome and Beijing was now in ashes and dust.
