Dear Friends,
I am pleased to inform you that after 1599 days, the accused in my very first solo criminal case has been discharged for "want of prosecution".

The woman, 7 months pregnant at the time of her arrest in December 2016, was formally arrested and cautioned [A thread]
by the Tema Port police after she had voluntarily travelled from Twifo Praso to Accra to provide information regarding diverted cocoa. The basis of her arrest baffles me till today.

After two years of police harassments, glaring bribe requests and endless adjournments
at the Circuit Court B Tema, I was so frustrated with the case that I told the judge I& #39;d withdraw from it in protest. I took the case pro bono assuming that it will last no more than a few weeks. It was interfering with my teaching schedule, sanity and good conscience.
The State then decided to move the case from Tema to the High Court, Accra after two years of hide and seek. In that time, the accused& #39;s husband finished his LLB, did the PLC and qualified for the Bar, and his senior took over the case.
Now after over 40 adjournments, endless travels of the accused from Twifo Praso to Accra for each court date and many missed attendances by the State prosecutors and police investigators, a new High Court judge felt he had no choice but to discharge the accused, yesterday May 10
The State has abused someone& #39;s rights from December 23, 2016 to May 10, 2021 without even starting the trial. Only a plea was taken in both the Circuit and High Courts. Her unborn child at the time of her original arrest will turn four years this year.
This is why we need to desperately #FixTheCountryGhana , #FixMotherGhana
