Thread: T-2 days to the @CRASSHlive Social Life of Care conference! I am excited and nervous - it is an entirely online 3 days event in the middle of a raging pandemic. Before I get even more snowed under I want to share some thoughts on academic care #CareAtCam
While preparing for the conference, I have found myself hoping that I don't hear about a loved one falling ill (or dying) between 13 and 15 May, which is a real possibility given current circumstances in India under an extremely uncaring government that acts with impunity.
Of course, that has made me think about impossible ideals of academic productivity (which a lot has been said about already) but it has also made me think about academic care. As a student, I thought of conferences as competitive networking events, but I have grown out of it.
A lot of work has gone into the #CareAtCam conference. It would not have been possible without an ethos of care cultivated by the organising team: Nicki of @CRASSHlive + @Jules_Allen_ @arif_yasmeen @eleanorfights & Siby Warrington, all members of the wonderful @GenderWorkGroup.
We have presenters from all around the world, including Chile, India, Australia & the US (calculating time differences was a bit of a challenge!) who will be presenting their timely research on care in these difficult circumstances. Hopefully the start of a global care network!
Many senior scholars have been generous with their time. We will have @lynne_segal @littler_jo @Chatzidakis_A, Jamie Hakim, Catherine Rottenberg of the Care Collective at #CareAtCam. Check out their recently published Care Manifesto ( @VersoBooks) - https://www.versobooks.com/books/3706-care-manifesto
We will also have Joan Tronto, Mary Evans ( @LSEGenderTweet), @lyn_ossome, @alpashah001, and @bevskeggs contributing to the discussions at the conference. The @GenderWorkGroup is reading their important works on care this term, check out the term card.
Finally, I really hope the ethos of care that has informed the @CRASSHlive #CareAtCam conference is evident to all participating in it from 13 to 15 May. Your last chance to register is tomorrow 12 May; more information here - http://sloc.crassh.cam.ac.uk . See you there!
