Can’t tell you how many shows & movies I’ve never auditioned for because I wasn’t the “right type of Asian”. Too many times casting has said - No, because I was Korean... when my DNA says otherwise & I identify as Asian American. Quite the hurdle in an already difficult industry. https://twitter.com/yoshi_sudarso/status/1391894699237994496">https://twitter.com/yoshi_sud...
Not to mention if you look at the tests they have contradicting information. I’ve taken 3 DNA tests & they all had different results... so I’m just Asian? https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤷🏻‍♀️" title="Achselzuckende Frau (heller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Achselzuckende Frau (heller Hautton)">Shouldn’t I be able to “act” as the Asian roles I can identify as? Not just be limited to “Korean roles”?
Unfortunately the business doesn’t quite see it that way yet. When my team wanted me to audition for certain roles in the past, if they were Chinese American or from Hong Kong but English speaking characters. Many instances I was still unable to even audition...
If an actor is the exact ethnicity of the role & best for the part, of course it makes sense. But when Asian characters end up white because they “couldn’t find the actor” but didn’t look past one group. Just doesn’t seem fair. Hoping this can change this year.. #AAPI https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt=""> #APAHM https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt="">
