Having spent a lot of quarantine learning more DPS in Overwatch, I am finding myself really distraught over how many people play Mercy (not Mercy mains, per se) making zero choices
It's really dismaying to play Mercy for almost 500 hours now and see people do very little on her, especially since I've really radically altered how I play her over the course of my OW career, and I am guessing that the game still doesn't tutorialize heroes very well
Mercy is not a support hero that turns fights. She's not capable of that - she's absolutely a "up front good decisions" healer like Moira and has been since her 2017 rework. You have to be constantly making good consistent decisions in order to make sure fights go off w.o a hitch
I get most of this mindset from a video by a person who does VODS called Coach Spilo and he really emphasized this theory, that you have to be a consistent choice-maker early in play - helping create oppos for your DPS to get early picks, topping off critical team mates, etc
That's not to say that I haven't pulled some fights out of my ass as a Mercy player but it usually required the cooperation of my other support (honestly, all plays do) but things won't go as horrifically pear-shaped if you're applying good choices consistently
It's really frustrating, even in low stakes shit like quickplay (and I do get people are learning or blowing off steam here) where I'm trying to take more aggressive angles as DPS and Mercy is healing a full health tank for no reason
Spilo brought up the fact that if you are healing someone who is full health, you're not generating ult charge, you are effectively dead weight in those moments
So much about OW as it currently stands is that most heroes are really made or broken in team fights and lead up to team fights by the critical thinking they do and being judicious. It's also what helps you improve (it has helped me!)

Just thoughts in my brain
Choosing well who to boost, who to heal, optimizing my play, my positioning, lowering my unneeded deaths, checking who has ults has made me a much better Mercy player
