Thread: I’ve made an effort in the last 5 months to get in the same room, not just online, with other hitting people. I’ve taken hitting lessons, tossed crappy BP to a pro player, had a fellow #hittingtwitter dad over to share swings, chatted with former pro coaches. My thoughts:
1) Pro players hit the ball way harder than you think. I was throwing 35 ft BP at dbats and the ball was to the back wall before I blinked. If you haven’t been in a cage with a pro player as their coach, maybe don’t post breakdowns of their swings.
2) Hitting takes intentional practice and effort. My day job/family means I can’t swing every day. This sometimes snowballs into a week or more without intentionally hitting. I took a hitting lesson, learned a lot, then couldn’t practice for a couple weeks and lost it. It’s no…
surprise that my best hitters are the ones that have the best practice habits between sessions. Especially during the offseason.
3) There is a lot of focus on the disagreements between hitting coaches on Twitter. But from what I’ve seen as an average joe, most of these guys agree on about 95% of hitting concepts. The last 5% isn’t as relevant until you’re playing at a high level of competition.
If youre good enough where that last 5% is the difference maker for you, you’re not coming to see me in my backyard cage. So if you’re trying to learn, or just starting, focus on the 95% first. There is PLENTY of performance to find there, especially on the youth/amateur level.
4) Lastly, every single person I’ve met up with has been an amazing experience. I highly encourage other parents and amateur coaches to reach out and engage with people from across the spectrum. I learned something from a fellow Dad AND a pro ball player within a 10 day span.
So if you’re one of the <1000 people that follow me, here is a challenge. Find someone online that has been helpful AND is within reasonable travel distance for you and get out there (it’s easier now that travel is safer). And if you’re in the North Austin area, DM me to come hit
