Back in high school, I played a bunch of the 2D Final Fantasy games on emulation. FFV was the one I got the farthest on (I didn’t end up beating it) and also the one I think I enjoyed the most at the time. Spoilers ahead!

The game is just a jaunt. So far, I’ve witnessed a giant meteor crash, befriended pirates, sailed around in a sea-monster powered pirate ship, and gotten stuck in a ship graveyard populated by spooky skeleton sailors. I have been playing for slightly less than 2 hours
