A thread about Kenny as Twitter justifiably brings him the finest meats & cheeses in all the land.

An anchor no longer w/ the company walked into the 11p SC show meeting back in ‘14, took one look at me and his face fell.

“So we’re on E2 tonight?”

His name was not Kenny Mayne. https://twitter.com/kenny_mayne/status/1391846208809877508
But he made me nervous for how an actual big-name anchor would act when I saw Kenny’s name on my schedule later that year.
1am SC, split show.
He’s in LA, I’m in Bristol.
He calls me after the meeting: “let’s have some fun with the open.”
Sure... Kenny... Mayne... let’s go 😬
“We both pretend we don’t know our mics are hot,” he explains.
“You roast me as a dinosaur. ‘My first 1am show & they put me with a fossil old enough to have been asleep 6 hours ago.’”
Entirely his idea.
Took a couple takes because I kept laughing, but we got it.
Snow flew by.
*He* thanked *me* with a DM after the show.
Then we’d DM a few times over the years, each of us on opposite sides of the clock.
After Stuart died.
After I almost crashed on I-84 in the snow & ice.
The thing about that one show we did?
It was on ESPN2.
I’m always thankful for the people at work, on and off air, who are nice, kind & patient when they don’t have to and with people who are way lower than them on the chain of command.
There are plenty left, but one fewer now, I guess.
