Where to even begin. MacLeod saying it's a travesty the statue was damaged, Ramsay looking to get @lnueypei to pitch in funding for alterations. I didn't catch who but a councillor stumbled on how to say Epekwitk and pronounced Mi'kmaq as "mee-maw".
(Council needs to get a good camera because I don't know who's speaking) And now we have someone that wants the statue to tell the good things MacDonald did too. Duffy complaining they already voted to keep it and they shouldn't rescind that resolution.
Duffy is worried process might make it appear, if he doesn't vote for the motion today, that he is against MacDonald staying. (This is incredibly stupid)
Seriously, he's been a councillor for how long? How does he not know how this works? This isn't a real concern, at all.
Bernard says he wants to read some of MacDonald's accomplishments. Yikes.
Councillors really upset about the idea people might not be able to take a photo with our genocidal first Prime Minister.
We've now got Duffy, Bernard and MacLeod all saying the photo op is a sticking point.
Mayor Brown says from correspondence the overwhelming opinion was completely remove the statue, no ifs ands or buts.
Duffy wants people to know council isn't waffling on the topic they've been waffling on for well over a year.
MacLeod (after Brown just said these were the terms @lnueypei was firm on) is there any room on these recommendations.
"I think there needs to be a little give and take. Reconciliation, what does that mean? It means you give and take, you know?"
(This isn't what reconciliation means, and tbh a lot of old white men have spent a long time taking. Council seems to want to continue that tradition.)
Question called!
Motion passes. 8 to 1. Duffy only vote against.
And with that, we have what council would consider a "compromise." The statue stays, significant alterations are to be made. Several councillors outed themselves with some very concerning racist garbage but we finally see *something* on the issue from @ChtownPE
