I won't be surprised at some point MS-Windows will adopt many Linux kernel features and will continue to use its GUI on top of it MS Linux distro. Something like macOS (stuff from *BSD with its own GUI). Why write & maintain your kernel like MS browser? There is no money in it.
Besides, the Linux kernel proved itself much harder to kill and used by cloud, Android, IoT, and more. Everything is going cloud these days. Microsoft's real cash cow on the desktop is MS office. The dream of a Linux desktop as an MS Linux distro looks horrible to me, lol.
