A thread on what’s happening now in Israel.

I disagree with many policies of the Israeli government.

Most Israelis do.

/1
The Jewish Israelis buying property in Sheikh Jarrah and those marching in the Muslim quarter on Jerusalem Day have the stated goal of exercising Israeli sovereignty.

Their behavior is the opposite of sovereignty.

/2
A sovereign nation protects it's ethnic minorities.
A sovereign nation builds infrastructure in minority communities.
A sovereign nation provides municipal service in minority neighborhoods.

/3
Of course, being distasteful is not the same as illegal occupation or ethnic cleansing.

Arab Israelis can buy homes in Ramat Aviv.

Jewish Israelis can buy homes in Sheikh Jarrah.

All Israelis have equal rights everywhere in Israel.

/4
Thankfully, Israel has a powerful independent judiciary that grants standing to minorities in absentia.

The court routinely finds in favor of absent plaintiffs against majority defendants on the basis of both Israeli and international law.

/5
When you suggest that the court timed its ruling for Ramadan, evoking ancient stereotypes of a powerful centralized, evil cabal…

/6
When the court rules that an eviction is legal and you call it ethnic cleansing, but you advocate for a Palestinian state on Ancient Jewish land that itself would be ethnically cleansed of Jews…

When you do these things, you move from Palestinian advocacy to antisemitism.

/7
When you can’t find Sheikh Jarrah on a map but are certain that you know more than the court which heard the facts, when there is no gray nuance, only black and white determined by the ethnicity of the parties, you move from advocacy to antisemitism.

/8
When you can't identify Area A, B, & C or who can enter each, but are certain you understand the conflict (Israelis of any ethnicity are allowed anywhere inside the green line. All Israelis and Palestinians are allowed in Area C. Only Jewish Israelis are banned from A & B)

/9
When targeted attacks on Palestinian militants are seen as war crimes, but indiscriminant rocket attacks on Israeli civilians are seen as legitimate resistance, you aren’t woke.

You are advocating for the murder of my family.

/10
You can criticize Israeli policy.

Lord knows I (and most Israelis) do.

When you are unable to criticize Israeli policy without questioning Israel’s right to exist or advocating for Israel’s destruction, you are guilty of antisemitism.
