Multipart thread/rant/hopefully 👁 opener:

I posted this grainy video 2 years ago to my Facebook. I was 11 days post op from minor abdominal surgery but surgery nonetheless. In truth, I started doing something movement related 12 hrs post op.

Read on if you deal w/HS athletes:
It’s mind blowing to me how often we get notes from doctors and chiros that say “two weeks rest no activity” or “two weeks rest no weight room.”

I cannot FATHOM how awful I would have felt upon return had I taken two weeks off.

Yet we expect adolescents to return full go?
It’s actually a recipe for catastrophic injury written by those who supposedly have the highest level of education. And they DO. In their craft. But not in ours.

The mindset should be what CAN the athlete do to IMPROVE when injured.
If one arm is injured? We have a second. We can even train that second limb and see improvements in the injured limb due to the wonders of our CNS.

So...if you’re the parent of an injured child, take pause if you hear that your child needs to sit out but fully return wks later.
Take even greater pause when told “2 weeks no weight room full go on field.”

This is an absolutely terrifying recommendation.

The forces sustained in sports are far higher than under a bar.

However the bar better prepared us to sustain those forces.

So lift. The end.
