Thread | Barça’s deficiencies against Atlético de Madrid:
•Atlético were in a 5-4-1 midblock.

—Correra (RM) jumped to Lenglet after Barça circulated through their three centre-backs past Luís Suárez.

—This jump relinquished space on the sides of Llorente, who was tasked with blocking passing lanes into a large indefensible space.
•Barça struggled greatly to exploit this space.

—Poor positioning inhibited Barcelona’s capacity to arrive into the indefensible space.

—The spacial relationship between Pedri, Griezmann, and Alba was not optimal and prevented step-by-step progression.
•Possible solution:

Occupy distinct vertical lines within the indefensible space to create an impractical scenario for Llorente.

Force Llorente to commit to a player -> find free man.

The free man receives in a 3v2 situation - attract a defender to create space in behind.
•Possible Solution:

—If Atlético’s CB opts to step into midfield to eliminate the 2v1 on Llorente, the midfielder can use his positional superiority to arrive in behind the last line.

—The forward should pull away to:
1) Drag away the CB
2) Generate space to attack a cross.
•On the right side, Barça occasionally won positional superiority with an interchange of heights from Messi & Dest.
•Once again, egregious positioning inhibited Barça to transfer their initial superiority (3 CBs vs 2 forwards) farther up the pitch.

—As a result, opportunities to score relied heavily on qualitative superiority (Messi).
•Possible Solution:

—Move step by step.
1) Engage pressure from Atléti’s forwards.
2) Bounce to find free CB (3v2 initial superiority).
3) Free man makes a movement to receive optimally (increase time).
4) CB commits to engage an Atléti midfielder = 4v3.
5) Work 4v3 to arrive.
@TacticoModerno @thesinglepivot @__ElJdP @mezzala8 I’m inquisitive about your thoughts.

I feel like we saw the limitations of playing positionally (especially on the left), facilitating Atléti’s stability w/o the ball.

Positional play was never more needed in my opinion.
