/9 I took my first extended road trip with the #ModelX and the family from Ohio to the Smokey Mountains. For the entire trip (no effort to conserve range - speeding, AC, mountains, heavy rain etc etc) I got about 90% of my range for a round trip of over 800 miles. (Maxed at 352)
/9 Nav on AP did almost all of the driving and was solid. At one point I was driving and my wife asked me to turn Autopilot back on. This is a great endorsement of the tech
or maybe lack of confidence in my driving. Arriving at the destination refreshed is invaluable.
/9 The #ModelX effortlessly goes up and down mountains. Dual motor / regen etc. fantastic. No lack of power. Felt very stable. Loved this.
/9 At the campsite I found a 110v plug which fit my needs well enough. The staff member was a huge Tesla fan and had many questions. He said they will add Rivian and Tesla chargers soon and they are piloting at some locations.
/9 unfortunately this area is a charting desert. No chargers in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge had 6 wall chargers at 3 locations. I couldn’t get any to work and used a J1772 at a hotel I didn’t stay at. The worker let me charge to stop me from crying
/9 This led to an issue the day we left. I didn’t have enough power to go back to the area to hike and make it to the nearest supercharger in Knoxville. Everyone was tired anyway so we ate some breakfast and hit the road.
/9 When I arrived in Knoxville (which added a little time to our trip) 7/8 chargers were full and the 8th was broken this was the second time I’ve waited to charge in 3 years. Bad timing. I only waited about 10 min until a spot opened up and was able to charge enough
/9 to get to Lexington there I was the only one at the charger. (500mph+). Quick charge. It rained heavily and I was amazed at how well the X handled. What a beast. The ride was comfortable and we had plenty of room. Tween in the third row. Perfect. (No dogs though)
/9 Pigeon Forge will apparently get a supercharger in Q3 and that will solve all my problems. If I knew what I was in for I would have charged longer in London Kentucky before arriving at our destination. Next trip is to Duluth MN with the family and pups. ❀ đŸ¶
