NYPD needs to be demilitarized but some of the language around Defund seems uncomfortably conservative or libertarian to me. Fundamentally, it's this idea that because something is not working, it's beyond reform and must have its "bloated" budget gutted.

Socialists, leftists, and liberals have to start treading more carefully around how they talk about Defund the Police, because it's not so far off from how right-wingers spoke about public schools and teachers' unions forever. Yes, teachers don't carry guns and kill people.

Also, people who talk about issues tend to not understand the numbers very well. The NYC Department of Education's budget is almost $28 billion. NYPD operating budget clocks in around $6 billion. You can bump that a little if you factor in pensions and benefits.
