Confused why we’re hearing so much abt this restaurant worker “shortage” in Michigan while fully ignoring the fact that we’re coming down from a brutal 3rd wave that started before vax eligibility expanded. Why are we acting like March/April didn’t happen & weren’t pretty scary??
Like Michigan is still number 1 for Covid nationally, for almost 2 months straight. We also have the most deaths. And remember all the “no one knows why it’s so bad in Michigan” headlines? My money is on that killing the “let’s get back to normal” vibe. Every. Single. Time.
Meanwhile Michigan has the most outrageous Patriot Super Spreader Club in the country. Do you want to work in a restaurant this Spring with variants swirling & antivax customers who’ll harass you abt masks? OR do you want to take Gretchen up on her free community college offer?
*Edited previous tweet to add antivax, considering the wild antivax legislative hearing we witnessed literally last week it felt like an essential detail to include when explaining the current Michigan vibe
All I’m saying is journalists, let’s just be smarter this wk. We’ve been in this dance with business interests &chambers of commerce for over a year now. Use critical thinking skills, take a step back think outside the box, talk to workers &don’t just parrot lobbyists’ narratives
A great example here of doing the “labor shortage” story better: https://twitter.com/rublekb/status/1391848121282465792
