We’ve made it into #Alaqsamosque and it feels like a war zone in here. Injured people, men and women barricaded in. Tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades everywhere. The itself is mosque a mess and burns my throat and eyes when I entered.
We’re just waiting for the next confrontation with the Israeli police and Palestinians here which feels very imminent.
The men in #AlAqsaMosque are collecting the tear gas and stun grenades and rubber buckets used against Palestinians by Israeli police. They’re preparing for the next confrontation with the Israeli police.
The men in #AlAqsaMosque are cleaning up and about to pray Duhur. There’s ambulances patrolling for injured and as today is #JerusalemDay, where hundreds of far right Israelis are expected to march , it means confrontations are expected all day
Things are relatively quite inside #AlAqsaMosque but there’s still stun grenades being thrown by #Israeli police.
Israeli police only allowing men over 40 to enter Al Aqsa to pray. They’ve cut the electricity mid prayer. The worshippers are all helping lead the prayer because the imam can’t use a microphone.
The afternoon prayer just ended in #AlAqsaMosque I can smell a lot of tear gas in the air
Headed out now to see the far right Israeli protesters marching for #JerusalemDay. They’re allowing them to march through the Muslim quarter. Clashes are expected. Will be updating.
Surreal. While young Palestinian men barricade themselves in Al Aqsa mosque, Israelis marching for #JerusalemDay and “march of the flags”
Just heard that a family (a father and his son and daughter) who are residents of #SheikhJarrah were arrested by #Israeli police. Their names are Hashem Sulayma and his daughter Alaa and son Muhammad.
Palestinian groups are threatening #Israel, issuing a warning that they must leave #AlAqsaMosque and Sheikh Jarrah and release all prisoners by 6 pm (almost an hour from now).
The Israeli #JerusalemDay march has begun. But we’re told they’ll no longer march to Damascus Gate, just to the Western Wall through Jaffa gate. Confrontations should be smaller now. But we’ll see.
