We like to point out how ironic it is that our male relatives were more Feminist than our mothers & grandmothers. How they encouraged Feminist beliefs and the latter pushed for patriarchal beliefs. What we forget is these women did not have the luxury to be Feminist like the men.
Our grandfathers championing women's rights was seen as something monumental. Our fathers cooking and refusing to participate in gender roles were hailed as modern men and treated with wonder. When our grandmothers tried that, they were accused of Witchcraft, threatened and
Belittled. Our mothers were insulted, threatened with spinsterhood, denied opportunities and other dehumanizing tactics. There was no room for them to be Feminist, especially if it meant a life of struggle. Feminism was a luxury men could afford and the women couldn't.
Look at all the women who openly supported Feminist beliefs and the struggles they faced. You had a better chance of being a Feminist if you were wealthy, educated and could take care of your family without your partners help. Our grandmothers with zero to little education
No job and 8+ kids, did not have the luxury to demand equal rights because their communities, husbands would have punished them. The only Feminism they could proudly afford was to fight for our mothers to get an education and attain financial Independence.
