What is dyslexia?

Have you heard of it before?

Did you know 50% of the people working at NASA are dyslexic?

The question is what is so tragic about people with dyslexia? The biggest issue is that so many go undiagnosed, for too long they think that they are stupid/slow/inept.
A quick intro into dyslexia. Dyslexia:
-can be identified physically in the brain
-is not retardation of the brain
-is not similar to autism (in fact they are almost opposite on a biological level)
-does not make you stupid or smarter
***
So what is dyslexia:
-it is a cognitive imbalance of the brain, simply put your brain is wired differently
-a reading disorder in spite of having normal intelligence
-the left side of the brain, which is used for decoding words doesn't function enough to correctly decode text

In MIT dyslexia is aka "the MIT disease." Dyslexics use more of the left side of their brain and this makes them more creative and innovative. Their strong points are problem solving and creativity.
30-40% of self-made millionaires in America are dyslexic.

Here comes the sad part. It's estimated that 5-10% of people worldwide are dyslexic.

An estimated 40-50% of prisoners are dyslexic but why? Because they fell out of school and into the wrong company. Society misunderstood them.

The most common attributes of a dyslexic person is daydreaming, aloofness, lack of attention and what people equate to stupidity. At least this is what teachers/parents will say. So these kids who want to learn but cannot are shamed. They feel so ashamed that they hide it.

It takes a dyslexic 4-5 times longer to read any text than a person without dyslexia. This is a problem in 5th grade because suddenly can't read but everyone else can. You can't read that one page in front of your entire class. Everyone else can.

Children who underperform in school, with dyslexia, often drop out. They can fall into juvenile detention centres, then go on to become drug addicts/homeless. There is much speculation about this but it's estimated in πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ 60-70% of juvenile drug addicts are dyslexic.

If you've been a teacher you've definitely taught dyslexic kids. The next time you hear someone say about a child/someone they know who is underperforming at school be sure to prompt them into an investigation. Tell them their child needs to learn differently kids should know too
I learnt to read (somewhat) when I was 12. in 5th grade I couldn't read (barely) but I pretended I could. I never told my friends and used to jot down homework in class as the teacher spoke. If I wasn't fast enough I simply didn't do h/w cause I couldn't read it.
***
I finally learnt how to read at the ripe old age of 12 because at the time Harry Potter was all the rage. I still say that book taught me how to read. Till now I skip entire paragraphs while reading, take the wrong meaning out of a text and my spelling is appalling.

Sometimes when I write an article and then revisit it the next day for edits I don't understand what I've written. D,b,q,g are always getting muddled. I cross my L's but not my T's. It's not all bad, I'm a problem solver, was great in math and I look at everything differently.
This thread is not about me at all, it's for all the kids who are too ashamed to talk. By helping identify this learning difference in kids you could save them from a life of shame and give them a better chance at surviving the already difficult world we live in. Spread awareness
Some dyslexics I know have an above-average IQ so you could be ignoring little geniuses.

Einstien, Sir Richard Branson, Eddison, Henry Ford and many, many more famously smart and innovative people were/are dyslexic. Don't turn your back on them because you don't understand them.
If you read thus far thank you. Please do not follow me because I'm really not an influencer. ;) I do hope you will spread the word about people made by dyslexia to everyone you know. Help these kids get somewhere, become something they want to be, and don't let them be a stat.
It's usually hard for kids to voice their troubles so give them a voice. Pay attention and who knows you could change their life for the better. Children with dyslexia should know they are not stupid just different. Teach them to stand out, not fit in.
